What’s going on at Wootton?

Anonymous
So in any of these letters did it say why the Wootton principal was put on leave and what are all these other incidences from this year that a few select Wootton parents and one Rockville High school teacher claim.

Or we just gonna make generalized claims to make noise, but then not back it up?

How is this the PTA’s issue. They are a bunch of volunteer parents. Why would they be the only ones informed.

This sounds made-up

The PTA and MCCPTA are literally written into MCPS policies as being the official voice and conduit for parent feedback and notifications. If you don't like it, take it up with MCPS.

But by virtue of telling PTSA leadership, I believe MCPS feels they fulfilled their part of notifying "the parent community."

Ick who are you?!? The PTA is not in charge of official notices about principal changes and it is certainly not their job to send out school wide notifications ahead of administration.

Get real

I did not say "the PTA is in charge of official notices." I said, they are the official voice and conduit for parent feedback and the parent community. So when MCPS leadership run through their checklist of things to do, which include notifying the parent community, that usually means engaging PTA leadership, who is usually given direct answers that principals and leaders can't say, but PTA leaders can. The PTA is used to disseminate information to the community, whether you like it or not.

Now that doesn't mean you have to agree with that, but that is how things are done and it's why the PTAs are given many special privileges and access throughout MCPS. If I'm breaking news to you then you probably haven't gotten deep enough in your knowledge of how MCPS and PTAs work.

This is a significant black eye for MCPS. Taylor needs to roll up his sleeves and get to work.

I am going to let you in on something I know you already know. Vulgar words and hate are committed every day at every high school in every state in every decade.

The black eye is not from the vulgarities uttered by the students, it was the failed leadership and breakdown in community trust on full display, after MCPS promised to shore up its reporting and follow-up protocols post-Beidleman.

1 incident a school year? I would say thats isolated

That’s what I don’t understand. It was an incident last year and one last week?

My daughter is gay and got bullied at her high school all the time. Nothing was ever done. The kids were just talked to. No in or out of school suspensions. She applied for a COSA (which was recommended) and left. Most victims have to leave MCPS schools because those that did the wrong, get nothing. This was direct to her face and known bullies, not just something random sketched on a desk or bathroom. That happens now in her new high school. It is definitely not county notified. They just clean it up and nothing is sent out to the parents. For us, it’s not worth all the complaints if you don’t know who. Teens can be jerks and have no frontal lobes. So can many parents. Look at all the fights about free lunches, transgender bathrooms, and sports eligibility. Putting a principal on leave because of 2 kids in 2 separate years did something wrong. Something isn’t adding up. There has got to be more to the story.

I agree. High School students change classrooms each period. The kid knew who was going to be sitting in that desk the next period or even later that day? Students write curse words and slurs on desks and papers every day because they think their peers will find it funny and they want the attention.

DP. My kids' schools have been through multiple principal changes over the years, and communications don't come via the PTA. They come from someone in central office, usually the director or associate superintendent.

Ugh you are unbearable. lol

The PTA wasn’t gonna notify the school community about this. Settle down sweetie.

Again: I never said they were going to "notify" the school community about this. But MCPS does use the PTSA in exactly the way I describe. Why else do you think they were involved in these post-incident conversations and given the heads up that Doug was being put on leave?

https://www.wjla.com/news/local/maryland-montgomery-county-public-schools-mcps-wootton-high-principal-placed-on-leave-racial-slur-incident-parents-douglas-nelson-ptsa-black-and-brown-coalition-for-educational-equity-and-excellence-

A representative of the Black and Brown Coalition for Educational Equity and Excellence in Montgomery County told 7News that MCPS has informed the group that Wootton High School Principal Douglas Nelson has been placed on administrative leave.

Coalition member Wylea Chase said Dr. Moran informed her and PTSA leaders on December 6 that Nelson is being replaced by an interim principal who will begin working at the school on Wednesday, December 11.

If PTSA leaders weren't viewed as official leaders of the parent community and expected to convey information to that community, why were they invited to the meeting by Dr. Moran and given privileged information that the rest of the school community did not receive?

So Moran told the Black and Brown Coalition about a change in leadership at Wootton, but never told the Wootton community. Par for the course with this clown.

I thought he did tell the Wootton community in a letter today, per Mocoshow

He told the Wootton PTSA too. Not just the Black and Brown Coalition.

I thought there was an earlier letter where Moran said he himself would be taking charge of the school temporarily.

Here it is:

"The superintendent has asked me to supervise activities and operations at Wootton High School for the next several days."
