Is silver spring a decent place to live?

How’s Rockville for house appreciation prospects? I feel like some areas like Twinbrook are really cheap and prime for value add/gentrification

Many nice neighborhoods have been mentioned in this string. As for DTSS? Nope. Not nearby or an amenity IMO.

My son and I used to eat in DTSS nearly every weekend for years. We always parked in this garage. No more. Have not been back since.

On the other hand, I see that robbers were in the Bethesda Target recently, so there's that.

You are going to regret living in SS. Not worth it.

Be careful buying anywhere in MoCO. Lots of bad news coming and the new administration might not be very kind on MD.

Really? What kind of crimes?

Ellsworth parking garage — a police officer shot. Another night: A guy was shot dead when placing leftovers in his car.

A man threatened to shoot my spouse in that same garage.

People without home takes over the library and parking garages

Panhandlers outside the Giant on 410 near Colesville.

Just a few things off the top of my head.

I’ve never returned after the man threatened to shoot my husband for “looking at me.”

And people here clutched their pearls and said no such things happened in Bethesda and only “ghetto” Targets locked up detergent, etc.

I was in a nice NJ suburb today and felt so relaxed. This area was so peaceful compared to the DMV. Never once did I think I was going to be carjacked.

Live here. Great neighborhood. Lots of kids—Catholic school and public schools. Very involved neighborhood with many activities.

zipcode 20903

If this is Op, no that zip is not nice. See the zips and neighborhoods that pps have posted. Avoid that zip though.

+1 Lifelong MoCo resident here and 20903 would be last on the list of Silver Spring zip codes for me. My cousins grew up in Hillandale and I don’t like what’s happened there in the last decade+, but basically all the other zips are better than they were then.

If you're so obsessed with unsolved murders, then I'm sure this one in Arlington will be of interest to you also. (Or maybe not, since you only care about trashing Silver Spring): https://www.arlnow.com/2024/02/20/four-years-after-unsolved-ballston-murder-no-new-details-from-police/

And in terms of shootouts, how about three teens being shot on Halloween, again in Arlington: https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/northern-virginia/3-shot-on-columbia-pike-in-arlington-on-halloween-night/3756138/

And armed robberies, well those are sadly common throughout the DMV. Here's one in Arlington where one person was shot and a bystander just missed getting shot: https://wjla.com/news/local/person-shot-robbed-suspects-run-off-bystander-survived-coffee-shop-ballston-arlington-county-police-department-investigation-gun-violence-gunshot-wounds-dmv-crime

I really have no idea why people on here are so obsessed about trashing SS and acting like they live in areas that are free of crime. My theory is that people just want to defend having paid so much money to live in their high-priced areas that are not any safer than SS.

Don’t act like SS isn’t far shittier than Arlington and then turn around and say that other postere are defensive. Makes it impossible to take you seriously.

Just because you dislike SS and insist on making every crime in SS worthy of ten posts on DCUM, that does not make your dislike justified, especially as you ignore all the comparable crime happening elsewhere. I hope you've found what you're looking for in NoVA, but for anyone who wants a safe area that is full of great people and wonderful neighborhoods, SS is an excellent choice.

+1
It’s one of the few remaining places with several zip codes that still have a combination of affordability, proximity, community and reasonable schools.

You are arguing in bad faith. Silver Spring has far more crime than Arlington or Alexandria and the stats back it up. It is also, unlike Arlington or Alexandria, on a downward trajectory in terms of crime and general quality of life.

I’ve lived in this area for 40 years. Downtown Silver Spring was much nicer 15-20 years ago. It had slidden downhill as DC’s crime rates have ticked up. DC had 92 homicides in 2012 and carjackings weren’t nearly as prevalent as they are now. Last year DC had 274 (!!!) murders and almost 1,000 carjackings. Silver Spring is just up Georgia Avenue from some sketchy neighborhoods in NE. It is not rocket science that a lot of crime would spill over into MoCo. Additionally, criminals know that the DAs in MoCo are far more lax than the DAs in Northern VA.

Anonymous
"Silver spring" is large place in MoCo and is not incorporated. There is a downtown Silver Spring, and then there is most of the rest of eastern MoCo, which is called "Silver spring" if there wasn't already a historic place name in existence.

I technically live in "Silver Spring" but I live about a 30 minute drive from "downtown Silver Spring."
