No way were the grandparents real communists in any ideological sense. There were decades where in order to get ahead in the Eastern bloc you had to nominally belong to the party, but most of the people weren’t real believers. Like most people on this earth, they want government handouts AND the free market capitalist chance to earn big bucks and will look to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. People like Kruschev and Gorbachev were actual believers in communism; someone like Yeltsin was not.
