The problem is that thereโ€™s been an uptick in bad behavior, much of which involves non-members who bring a bus full of people to watch Ryleigh Shaniatwaine not swim for 30 minutes then stay for eight more hours. They donโ€™t respect the space or people because they have no investment in the pool. This rule is getting enforced now because the freeloaders made themselves too obvious with their conduct.

I was at a neighborhood gathering a few months ago where the moms who do this were brazenly bragging about it. They talked about bringing their whole families and cooking dinner there.

I'm shocked the membership doesn't cancel lessons for non-members

The goal of offering swim lessons to non members, if I remember correctly, was to make them available to neighborhood kids who might not otherwise have access to learn to swim. I'm pretty sure that's not how it's played out.

It was obviously so non members could access the pool and BBQ.

Ha, they probably want the kids for swim team but then don't want them there for anything else.

Probably the most fascinating thing in this old thread (though I could only make it through the first four pages) is all of the people who said that there was no waitlist when they joined 2011. I have friends who just got off the waitlist this year after a 10 year wait. What happened in 3 years for it to go from no waitlist to thousands on a waitlist?

Good question. It's a little bit mysterious, but it's probably a combination of 3 things.
1. An article in the Washington Post about local pools
2. An influx of new people moving into Mt. Rainier. It was affordable! It was discovered!
3. The magic of virality

A lot of those members were not from MtR

Are trans women and girls allowed in the appropriate locker room at PG?

My theory is that the income of families moving into mt rainier tipped over some line that correlates to pool membership.

The pool IS sort of dumpy, but itโ€™s great in all the ways that matter. Itโ€™s close, it has lots of huge shade trees, the pool itself is big. I can see the appeal. But all the other local private pools are nice too, so I think this one just has outsized demand related to location.

Iโ€™m sure they are! Also while it is long in the tooth, the womenโ€™s area is spacious and has several big private changing rooms.

They can. And many are from DC, as evidenced by the license plates in the parking lot.

Not surprising given that the DC border is less than a mile away.

Swim team is only for members, at least for the past few years.
