Have you ever visited Madeira? Campus alone it is leaps and bounds better than GDS, Holton and Potomac. NCS/St. Albans have the Cathedral, which is second to none. However, Madeira's 350+ acres on the Potomac are also quite special. |
| But if you have a 3.7 or lower, it's all for naught |
DP. Everyone knows these ratings mean nothing anymore even college wise. You can buy your way in on Niche. Plus look at the criteria they are using. They are not using criteria for who is the best or most prestigious or most selective school. Their criteria is based on other factors. Madeira is a nice school and has a beautiful campus but no it is not on par with the other top independent schools in the area. |
How do you define prestige? If you look through the long list of notable Madeira alumna, I would argue they are definitely in line with those of the other schools listed. Ultimately, Madeira is a wonderful school. So is Stone Ridge. Both have wonderful networks. Madeira has alumna throughout the world, Stone Ridge has the benefit of the Sacred Heart network. I went to Madeira and fell in love with it immediately. I chose it over Holton and NCS, both of which accepted me. However, I have plenty of friends that got into Madeira and chose NCS or Holton instead. Don't chose your school based on prestige and selectivity. Pick it based on where you/your daughter will be happiest. |
Current 8th grade class - do many girls leave and attend boarding schools or other schools or do most stay for 9th? |
-1 Ridiculous post |
Nope - the brother school used to be Episcopal before it went coed. You're not fully describing the Catholic social scene that can dominate Catholic schools in this area. OP, are you Catholic? Do you belong to a country club that has a lot of CAtholic school kids? The Catholic schools can be clique-y going back generations, based on neighborhoods, parents and grandparents knowing each other, country clubs, blessed sacrament type schools, churches, etc. Madeira offers everyone a fresh start at ninth grade where everyone is new. Very different from SR. |
I am not talking about campus. I am talking about academics. No one in their right mind would say that Madeira has better academics than the schools listed. No one! |
Absolutely no one believes that |
Madeira alum here and I can confirm Madeira's brother school was historically Episcopal. Madeira does a lot with area boarding schools, but doesn't have an official "brother" school. |
Madeira has wonderful academics and has historically attracted smart girls. There is also more to school than academics alone. A student can be at the "best" school but if they are not happy, they will not succeed. Ultimately, GDS, NCS, St. Albans, etc. aren't in consideration. The question was to compare Stone Ridge with Madeira. Both have Pros and Cons. |

You will get a good sense of the school’s culture when you visit.
When we visited many of the day schools in the area (NCS, SR, etc.), we felt a lot of the school culture being reflected and dictated by the parents. I got a strong sense of the Madeira culture from the students. It was inspiring. |

Campus is one thing but to have your daughter be on the outs as a day student and navigate that divide, you might as well save the time sitting on Georgetown Pike and have a normal high school experience at any of the independent schools in the DMV. Don't say you weren't warned. |

| Nothing to do on the weekends at Madeira, and students get lonely. Stone Ridge without hesitation. |
