Removing SROs has created an unsafe learning environment for everyone.

I cannot believe you are seriously defending the removal of SROs.

Keeping them in schools makes schools less safe. It was the right call to remove them.

The facts prove the opposite. There are constant fights and violence in MCPS now.

I know some posters here seem to push this but my kids tell me the opposite.

If we could make schools more like prisons, people would hate it and we could stop spending all this money on public education.

| Moore unveiled a new crime bill last week called the Accountability Rehabilitation and Collaboration Act (ARC) [marylandmatters.org/2024/02/02/juvenile-justice-reform-bill-proposes-tweaks-to-the-system/]
that increases the state’s ability to prosecute children under the age of 13 for violent crimes. It would also expand the Department of Juvenile Services and make it easier for police to look into a juvenile’s criminal history.

Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said this is a balanced approach to address the issue. He cited multiple crime statistics that have increased year-over-year, including a 20% increase in gun crimes, 200% increase in auto thefts and an over 85% increase in carjackings.

"Last year we had 96 that were seriously physically injured,” McCarthy said. “That’s just in Montgomery County. In the area of carjackings, we don’t solve every carjacking in Montgomery County. But in the cases where we actually made arrests, 70% of the kids arrested for carjackings in Montgomery County are juveniles.”
...
A hearing for the Senate version of the bill is expected to take place on Friday. |

Make your voices heard if you want SROs back

Also, if you don't want SROs back.

I'd rather keep people with guns out of schools. SROs make schools less safe.

Agree if people wanted school safety, they'd push for common-sense gun reforms that the GOP consistently blocks.

what makes you think people aren't doing that?

We can do both: push for gun reforms and have SROs? MCPS doesn't have to be a one trick pony.

This person is a one trick pony. MCPS has no control over gun laws and even if they put in more gun laws, the guns are already on the street and people ca 3-d print them. So, we need both. However, the question is why can MCPS do about keeping our students and staff safe. Hire more security, bring back SRO's, security camera's, metal and other detectors to start with. Then, start suspending and expelling violent kids.

SROs which are now actually Community Engagement Officers are not going to be coming back anytime soon. There is a shortage of MPD Patrol officers so let’s think differently about ideas to help.

Wow - it is almost like the police have been defunded, demoralized, hobbled, denigrated, demonized by one party for years, threatened with prosecution for doing their jobs, etc.

Almost.

Seriously…. This is where you decided to take this. One could say it’s almost like the police have used and abused their position of authority against many people for years, essentially abandoning the rule of law to which they were sworn to uphold. For years people kept saying this was true and complaining but were dismissed until video after video after and investigation after investigation surfaced proving the complaints were true.

Now that we’ve dispensed with the BS and understand that there are bad apples and good apples in all things can we actually focus on solutions that work with where we are in this reality.

The problems with our justice system are separate from those with MCPS.

The county exec will not to anything as if he was willing he would have stepped in long ago. So, what is the BOE and new superintendent going to do about this?
