What’s Fairfax high school like

You know, it's to counteract the area's (long ago) civil war history. Lots of streets have been renamed. Heck, the school's mascot was changed. It's a correction. A blip. Not significant, in one political direction or another, to weigh when making a school decision.

WTF are you even talking about?
You should use the quote button in the top right corner of the post you are responding to.

I personally have no issue with renaming schools like Robert E Lee any more than I would with renaming a german school named after Rommel.
But did anyone even know who mosby woods or wt woodson was named after?
If you need a historian to point out that a name is racist, maybe increasing teacher pay is more important.

That’s not a bad thing.

It depends on how it is implemented.

Most kids love tacos and dumplings but it shouldn't come with a lecture on how white people are the source of all evil in the world.

Lucky for you that’s not being taught. My DC is there. So I would know.

I have no idea how it's being implemented at Fairfax but there are in fact schools that teach history through the lens of white oppression.
How exactly is DEI and restorative justice implemented at Fairfax?

A) history is currently taught through a lens that doesn’t give enough attention to white oppression-which is a fact not an opinion. We are white. It’s not bad or wrong to teach those things. But in looking at my child’s curriculum- it’s the standard line taught since I was in HS. What some of you think is happening in the classroom- it just is not happening systematically as part of the curriculum.

So feel safe in knowing that “white history” is still the default.

As far as how DEI and restorative justice- I have no information or observation to say it is. At least not in any obvious way.

Do they talk about diversity? Ofc and they should as Fairfax is very diverse. I’m in the school a lot and have to question if most of you who post here are. Because the “bogey men” y’all are fretting about just does not exist.

Absolutely I know who Mosby is. Not woodson or Lanier. But some people did know. AND the intent of these names was -explicitly- to honor the confederacy. It's entirely appropriate to rename them because of that.

As for the other poster talking about Fairfax, that change went through while my kid was there. It was a non-issue. There were a few dopes who got bent out of shape but these are the same people who still use Redskins instead of Commanders. They sound silly and just get sillier with the passing years. "Grandma still says Redskins b/c she is set in her ways."
