How early was your son? I am just curious as to what is considered early for a boy?

My DD just turned 9 and has lots of leg hair, no hair under her arms but very light pubic hair that she noticed awhile ago. She's needed deodorant for quite some time (she's also crazy active). She has no breast buds, so I think she's fine and ped agrees.

She's also very tall (97th+ percentile) and weight usually tracks right with it. She's pretty much solid muscle.

She’ll be fine, really.

Yes its just a bit of hair and developing breasts. Totally normal.

Apparently not these days - the poor girls have to be poked and prodded and tested and scanned. What kind of message is this sending to them about their bodies and sexuality? I developed early and felt like I was deprived of information and support to handle it, as if my period was something to be hidden and ashamed of. I always thought that was unfortunate. But my parents freaking out and anxiously monitoring my genitalia, taking me to have my “breast buds” examined by a likely male endocrinologist, would have been even worse.

Yes just accept that they are now developing and let us parents give them all the support without sending them to specialists for something that is maybe a bit younger but normal. Everybody is different in their development.

If they’re girls starting puberty at 8 then that’s normal. If they’re 6-7 and are showing signs then they need to see an endocrinologist.

8 for girls, 9 for boys is on the early side of normal.

They are only banning puberty blockers given for trans kids. Precocious puberty is still treated with hormone blockers. As long as hormone blockers are stopped before a certain stage of development there are no problems. The possible side effects are when hormone blockers are given when puberty starts.

In states that are paying a lot of attention to doctors who prescribe these meds, you may have a hard time getting them even if you think your kid is one who deserves them. When the government gets involved in health care it doesn't always work out as planned.

This child was stick skinny too. For what it's worth.

NP. How old was your son at the start of puberty and how old is he now? I have the opposite - 12.5 year old son with no signs of puberty. Wondering when it will start. He is also stick thin and is gulping whole milk and eating ic cream every night.

Ha! My 14 year old has no signs of puberty. 12.5 is not late at all for a boy.
