How many credit cards do you actively use?

We have a Discover that we use the most and a credit union Visa that we use for places that don't take Discover.

I have two in my own name only -- a cashback Amex from when Costco only took Amex, and a Costco Visa.

Spouse and I both have work credit cards, but I don't really count them because we can only use them for work travel (we're government employees)

I think it is more work to keep track of all of these. Plus, can you optimize benefits doing this?

With that many cards you are really getting pretty marginal benefits. And many of them you don't need to use the card to spend anything on to get the benefits. I have an IHG and Marriott card.that I keep solely for the free annual night with each card. No spend required. One has a $49 annual fee, the other $99. So it's easy to get good value out of them. But I never use them for spending.

I'm a NP, but if PP is playing the points game, this is not uncommon whatsoever. Although usually in the points game, that many cards are not really used regularly, but more so they are churned for sign up bonuses.

Three.

Citi Double Cash - this is what we use for just about everything. 2% cashback, can't be beat. Two exceptions:

We have an Amazon Prime Visa that gives us 5% cash back on Amazon purchases. We use it exclusively for Amazon.

We have an old American Express that has good protection for rental cars. We don't own a car, don't have car insurance, and rent cars probably 3-4 times a year, and when we do, we use this card for the protection.

The Citi Double Cash is a shared account between my husband and I, so we each have one of those, and then I carry the AmEx and he carries the Visa so we each have a back up card if there's ever an issue.

Exactly- if you are playing the points game, you aren't using that many cards regularly. OP asked about cards "actively used" and that response said "15-20 that I use regularly". I play the points game and have a number of "shoebox" cards that I keep for the benefits, like those hotel cards. But I use them at most once per year- either to put some activity on the card to keep it open, or because of some bonus or such, like staying at a hotel of that brand. I think the average points game player probably uses 3 or 4 cards actively- one for whatever sign up bonus you are working on, and a few others for the in between times or specific categories.

3. None have an annual fee. All have different reward categories and I use them for different purchases throughout the month. I trade in all available cash back at months end and pay them in full. I make about $50 to $100 in rewards per month.

Everything else goes on the credit union CC which gives 2% back on everything. I forget which cc gives the best cash back on travel but we don't travel often so I just look that up when I book hotels and plane tickets.

Capitol One Mastercard, Costco Visa, and my credit union debit.

Have a work card only for my company.
