Not that way. Polling for public opinion has a place and expert opinion has a place, both matter.

The democratization of opinion is not a good thing.

Used to be, an opinion had to survive a review process to merit publication and distribution: the underlying assumptions and facts had to be true (or at least supported), the author had to have expertise and/or credibility, etc.

This gatekeeper process served to limit amplification of unfounded, ill-conceived, and downright stupid opinions.

It obviously wasn’t perfect, but what we see today—where every idiot with a phone is a self-proclaimed expert on everything—certainly illustrates the previous system’s value.

Fact is, most people’s opinions on most things are utterly worthless.

Amplification of those opinions harms us all.
