Lack of history classes, lack of civic classes, lack of world event classes all taught with rigor.

Lack of pride in the US taught by the schools.

I made the kid read the diary of Anne Frank. I doubt it will ever be assigned.

The left says everything is racist and the right says everything is woke.

Honestly it's hard to know what the majority of the left or right or anyone think because we've mistaken loud voices on social media as representative of a majority. What does properly conducted polling actually show? Get back to using that as a source for what people think.

Polling? Have you seen the state of polling today? It's all leading questions designed to get the answer whomever is funding the polling wants.

Besides, that's not how we used to do it. It used to be that a small few were considered experts and we relied on whatever they thought. Regular people didn't have opinions.

I don't mean to be a killjoy. The democratization of opinion is a good thing. But we got lazy and transactional. Twitter is easy. Debates are fun. STEM is where the money is. Teaching is just a service sector job.

Notice I said *properly* conducted polling.

Please tell me how to "properly" poll on this issue?

Does Israel have a right to exist?
Does Palestine have a right to exist?

Not that way. Polling for public opinion has a place and expert opinion has a place, both matter.

This.

TikTok and other platforms succeeded in creating a false narrative using buzzwords they knew would appeal to dumb Americans.

Islamic extremists are using it to promote the false narrative. And China and Russia (or anyone, really) can and will use it.

DH and I are bleeding heart liberals who are routinely shocked by the nonsense our kids say they heard on TikTok. At least two generations are being brainwashed…probably more.

We are so screwed.

Lack of pride is an understatement.

A generation of kids have been taught to feel ashamed of their race and ashamed of western culture…ya know…the colonizing racist slave holders.

Forget democracy, rule of law, equality, free speech, etc. America super sucks, kids.

I can’t wait to hear what Bill Maher says about this on Friday night. He’s been warning everyone about this for years…just like he predicted Trump wouldn’t leave the White House willingly.

I'm starting to think that the doomsayers were right about TikTok - and also that the conservatives who said our decadent society was going to crumble were maybe onto something, too.

I'm a moderate D - I still support Biden. I am as middle of the road as they come. And I'm starting to understand why older people are so dismissive and wary of the youngs.

The Guardian took down the letter because it was getting too much traffic after going viral on TikTok

I’m similar to you politically. I’m a millennial.

And I’m really tired of hearing about how the young generation is going to save us… Not seeming to be the case at all

OMG. Here we have one of the finest examples of gaslighting I think I've ever seen. Members of YOUR party are expressing admiration for Osama bin Laden and Hamas - not to mention, hatred toward Jews - and all you've got is, "It's the GOP's fault!" You are a disgusting example of why this is happening.

For those who haven’t seen it, here is a clip of Bill talking about western civilization. https://youtu.be/wnl243DjsUE?

Western civ - the positives - needs to be taught again.

When both the left and the right conspire to weaken public education, it leaves room for hostile foreign entities to take its place. Nonsense like this results.

We all of course know that most of the loud and dumb voices on TikTok supporting Bin Laden would be the first immediately executed in the radical Islamist caliphate that he envisioned, assuming they are actually normal people and not foreign paid agents. But this is a group of people without basic education. Keep in mind a lot of the loudest voices here lost 1-2 years of schooling at an absolutely critical juncture in their education.

The US doesn’t value education any more, across the board politically. This is the result.

Don't disagree, but as a Baltimore resident, I can assure you that more school funding is not the solution.

The problem is that social media has given everyone the (mistaken) idea that their opinions are worthy of being shared.

Strongly disagree. We need freely shared ideas and more critical thinking

The VAST majority of humanity is not interested in or capable of critical thinking.

Social media has merely encouraged the ignorant, the idiotic, and the evil to share their baseless opinions on… everything.

Worse, it’s given them the illusion that their opinions should matter, regardless of the merits of their arguments.

It’s a truly awful outcome for humanity.

I've never been on TikTok. Instagram is already more vapid than I can handle and the name TikTok just seems ridiculous.

These kids are functionally illiterate.
I'm not exaggerating.
They never put pen to paper and even typing is becoming outdated as they use voice-to-text for everything.
And everything they consume is in video form.
They actually cannot read or write.

The democratization of opinion is not a good thing.

Used to be, an opinion had to survive a review process to merit publication and distribution: the underlying assumptions and facts had to be true (or at least supported), the author had to have expertise and/or credibility, etc.

This gatekeeper process served to limit amplification of unfounded, ill-conceived, and downright stupid opinions.

It obviously wasn’t perfect, but what we see today—where every idiot with a phone is a self-proclaimed expert on everything—certainly illustrates the previous system’s value.

Fact is, most people’s opinions on most things are utterly worthless.

Amplification of those opinions harms us all.

Critical thinking skills are lacking in young people whose brains haven’t finished developing and who seemed easily swayed. Also radicalization isn’t reserved for Qanon lovers; it’s happening to young affluent liberal people (particularly white) who seem to need to quickly latch onto some idea with no real world experience or struggles.

The dots connecting that Bin Laden was ends justified the means because American citizens paid taxes that funded a government that had foreign policy that supported Israel or that supported oil rights in the Gulf is dangerously close to saying theories that would support blowing up China (as an example).
or the eugenic positions that were used to build “a better and stronger Germany) 80-90 years ago.

Perhaps you should stop for a moment and ask yourself why groups like Isis and Hamas exist? They were not created in a vacuum.

Because men teach their children that war and fighting is glorious and heroic.
