| Yes, my husband and I definitely would. |

Doesn't matter whether it is Hyde Park in Chicago or Lewiston, Maine. Bad things can happened anywhere.
Thank goodness this incident didn't impact any Bates students directly. |
This is the thing. This is hardly even violent robberies or some such being more prevalent. |
If you think the probability of bad things is equal in Chicago and Lewiston then you're pretty stupid. |
I went to CCNY in the bad old days (late 80s/early 90s). DH went to Temple and later to UPenn around that time. Never had any bad experiences, although one would occasionally hear of someone getting mugged, and it was normally an instructor. I guess they knew that we were broke college students, and probability of getting $$ out of us was pretty low. To answer OP's question, if the school campus is safe, and especially offers niche programs not easily replicated elsewhere, I would absolutely allow them to go. |
Same with our family. I lived/worked/owned a house in Baltimore city for many years. Also worked for JHU for 3 years. Not interested in applying to JHU knowing what I know about that area after living there. |
And are you a large male or a small female? That makes a difference in terms of being a target. |
| The world has become a much more dangerous place since most of us went to college. |
They don't make calculations like that. They will beat you or kill you for $10 if they see the opportunity. |
Thanks. Leaning that way, but having been in town during college visits, it was...eye-opening. Though it's sometimes difficult to know if that's bias talking. Not like I grew up in a working class New England town. Maybe appearing rough doesn't mean it's really rough. |
