Would you downvote a school over being in an unsafe area?

Correction to above: in Lewiston, not at Bates specifically.

Many schools cheat on their Cleary reporting of on-campus crime as required by the federal government.

Would probably help if you named the schools ? (Drexel ? Temple ? U Penn ?)

Hmmm, no cheating here. I guess I'd forgotten when I said campus was safe: they've had an issue with sexual assaults involving students. Just nothing spilling over from town is what is what meant.

Sounds like Bates College in Lewiston, Maine:

Not Bates. But really, do specifics matter?

Well, there's an active shooter at Bates today (multiple victims) https://www.pressherald.com/2023/10/25/multiple-victims-reported-following-shootings-in-lewiston/

Ah. Wasn’t aware.

But like I said, minus a sexual assault problem that I absolutely am not ok with, this campus is safe. And DH pointed out that DC will hardly ever leave...so that's our answer.

Still curious how other parents see it.

For female students, I feel like risks are high for them wherever they go. City. Frat houses. Walking alone in a rural area. I’m not sure the equation changes as much for them.

This is so sad but so true…

It’s in the town not on campus.

OMG 22 dead and 50 -60 injured. The killer is still at loose. Who thinks safety is not of the most importance is insane. Hope the college kids and everyone in that area are are safe.

That’s ancient history. Whereas, as of last night there’s an active shooter at large in Maine, near Bowdoin College. Mentally illness can happen anywhere. A guy shot dead 22 people at a bowling alley, a bar and Walmart distribution center.

^^ shootings in Lewiston, where Bates is, and not far from Bowdoin College.

The shootings in Lewiston, Maine (home of Bates College), occurred at two locations, not three.

The bowling alley is just north of Bates College's campus; the pool hall/bar is just south of the Bates College campus. Bates College is right in the middle of both shooting locations.

Lewiston, Maine is not a nice city. Violent crime has been rising steadily over the past 5 years in Lewiston, Maine. Lewiston is the second largest city in Maine (about 38,000 residents) and is the second most dangerous city in Maine for violent crime.

See, as someone who grew up in DC before heading south, I would have NEVER expected that much violent crime in Maine. Call me naive, but I bet a lot of parents would be surprised as well.

Well , as I was about to write last night, DD turned down Bates because she was creeped out by Lewiston.
