What is the obsession with UVA for out of staters?

This, basically. Zero obsession.

Why do I feel like the OP is a UVA booster, posing as an innocent question-asker? Anything to keep UVA in the conversation!

This. We're in VA and neither of my kids were interested in UVA (one at VT, one at a LAC) but I understand the appeal. To me the most stand out aspect is more that it's a known flagship but not massive like Michigan, UCLA, Berkeley, other OOS flagships that people pay a ton of $$$ to attend. Personally, I wouldn't pay OOS sticker price for any of them but we didn't have an unlimited budget for college. Those who do I'm sure have a different balance of considerations.

Oh, your kids didn’t even apply? UVA is very popular with local high school applicants. That’s great that they are happy where they landed.

OMG.

I get it is a good school and price of tuition can’t be beat if you are instate.

But I don’t get the obsession from the MD crowd.

Is it just since they are influenced by the VA parents?

I am a longtime VA resident and I am not interested in UVA and my kids are not interested in UVA. UVA school environment appears toxic (boasting, dominant Greek life, southern location etc.) from the postings by the various UVA boosters on this site.

Agreed!
Personally, I do not get why anyone would pay OOS for a large state school (even Michigan or Berkeley). If I'm paying $65K+, I'd rather my kid be at a smaller private school and pay the $80K.

Personally I don’t understand paying 80K for a smaller private school (given the choice) that’s not a Berkeley or Michigan in terms of academics or renown. To each his own.

There are plenty of excellent well known smaller schools with amazing academics.

I remember when my mom told my aunt and uncle in PA that my brother was going to VA Tech. My aunt said, "Oh, I didn't realize he was going the technical route. What trade is he learning?" because they thought it was a literal technical college.

This thread is about UVA. And you and your family sound very provincial.

There does seem to be an allure to it. IMO this is because people that think it's prestigious and its impressive to say you got in there. Same reason everyone seems to love Michigan. Maryland just as good and likely to be 1/3rd the tuition. Makes no sense to me!

You mean one of the fake "UVA boosters" that just randomly post to stir the pot on the pro-UVA / anti-UVA sniping? Yes, that is possible.

How does that answer the question?

I'm STILL laughing over this! go look at W&M and the SLACs. HAHAHA

UVA Arts and Sciences undergraduate is 38.5% male for the incoming class and is by far the largest school.

176 full time, freshman from NY.

and 486 full time undergrads. Source: same.

A small amount in a huge school.

Oh just stop it. It’s not a huge school. It has about 3500 students in a class and over 2000 of them are in state because of the cap on out-of-state enrollment, so among out-of-state students it’s about 10% of the class. That’s not all that small, especially considering that New Yorkers are only 5 percent of the national population.

Recent roads always remind me of Yogi Berra: “Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.”

Any New York city parent with high achieving kids will tell you that admission to UVA from New York City and its suburbs is extremely difficult because so many students apply to UVA from that region. The idea that nobody does is completely ridiculous.

It’s about half the size. So for many UMD is just too big but UVA is a great size.

Agree! Because as everyone knows, CS is the only majors that matters. Who cares about the rest!

UVA used to be discussed by my MD friends as an option for their kids, but over the past few years has seemed to turn into an obsession to get their kids in. Maybe it is a competition amount their peers? Maybe UMD is seen as second rate/they want to be out of state? Something seems to have changed in the past few years.

And then on this forum there is an obsession over it. I get it is a good school, but seems over the top.

Not anymore. OOS schools have been really jacking up rates on OOS students I rather send kid in state or private college.

When your most well-known state option is a place like Rutgers (huge, town isn't nice, hard to finish in 4 years, so-so sports, suitcase school), UVA is really attractive.

Rutgers is a great state flagship university.

So is UVA.

They don’t think they will get in (and they probably won’t bc they haven’t taken the courses UVA likes to see) but they are just throwing in an application anyway. They also likely can’t afford it. These are kids who like state schools and the culture of UVA. No one wants to go to UMD.

Definitely not true. Only in your feeble mind.
