Anti-UVa trolls have started more than 15 threads like this in the past few months. (They always pretend to be a parent.) The very definition of "obsessed." |
I think the obsession around Michigan and Penn State is much greater than UVA!
Only in dcum-land do you hear so much UVA discussion. |
UVA has an unattractive M/F imbalance. |
How does that answer the question? |
the attractiveness of this depends entire on whether you are a guy or girl. |
I can guarantee most people outside of the DMV area do not know UVA. It doesn't have the name recognition that you think it does. Neither does VA Tech.
I remember when my mom told my aunt and uncle in PA that my brother was going to VA Tech. My aunt said, "Oh, I didn't realize he was going the technical route. What trade is he learning?" because they thought it was a literal technical college. |
Yawn. So tiresome and unoriginal attempt at trolling. No wonder DCUM peaked in 2017. Bye, all! |

Can someone fill me in with the obsession over UVA for out of staters?
I get it is a good school and price of tuition can’t be beat if you are instate. But I don’t get the obsession from the MD crowd. Is it just since they are influenced by the VA parents?
I am a longtime VA resident and I am not interested in UVA and my kids are not interested in UVA. UVA school environment appears toxic (boasting, dominant Greek life, southern location etc.) from the postings by the various UVA boosters on this site.
Agreed! Personally, I do not get why anyone would pay OOS for a large state school (even Michigan or Berkeley). If I'm paying $65K+, I'd rather my kid be at a smaller private school and pay the $80K.
Personally I don’t understand paying 80K for a smaller private school (given the choice) that’s not a Berkeley or Michigan in terms of academics or renown. To each his own.
UVA OOS for engineering and when accepted into the business program is about $87-$89k total cost. It may be the most expensive state school there is for OOS tuition for these kinds of majors.
and now $94K at USC. UVA is still a better pick over elite privates |
THis is very true. "Is it true that UVA is a party school?" etc. etc. etc. All from rival students or disgruntled parents. |
I'm STILL laughing over this! go look at W&M and the SLACs. HAHAHA |
85 kids from Maryland enrolled last fall as first time freshmen. https://ira.virginia.edu/data-analytics/university-data Doesn't sound like obsession. However it does sound trollish. |
We live in MD and my child is applying because she is a legacy and feels strongly connected to UVA. There are a bunch of kids at her school who are also applying. They don’t think they will get in (and they probably won’t bc they haven’t taken the courses UVA likes to see) but they are just throwing in an application anyway. They also likely can’t afford it. These are kids who like state schools and the culture of UVA. No one wants to go to UMD. |
I'm guessing you are the troll that started this thread. |
I’m not from DMV. It’s seen as somewhat comparable to elite private colleges (not too big, plush campus). A little cheaper than elite privates. Moderate weather. And one of the better places to go to acquire connections if you aspire to a career associated with federal government (nicer campus & more traditional experience than Georgetown/GW/AU; nicer environment than U of MD). |
Sorry. I meant of this group of kids. Obviously lots of kids want to go to UMD and many of these kids (probably all) are applying. But they really want to get further away. |
