MCPS run international trips

Some parents are just jealous their kids might go without them.

Many parents couldn’t even consider sending their kids in such trips because of the very considerable cost. Check your privilege.

I’m shocked by the responses on this forum considering most brag about having an HHI of $500k…

I'm not jealous and we could do it buts not our values to spend that kind of money unnecessarily and hand our kid off to strangers and hope for the best. We'd go as a family.

Many of us don't make close to that amount but its shocking to see that they are allowing teachers to make money off of students while screaming equity.

Teachers in no way make money off of students through EF trips.

This. When you excuse petty corruption, you end up with major corruption.

This. Teachers probably get a free trip and paid through the company. It’s crazy expensive.

Send dc to Europe last spring for less than we spent on a crappy family vacation. I would say they're the opposite of crazy expensive. They're actually really reasonable. Highly recommend.

We had an amazing experience with them.

Do they do this for all World Language classes?
I don't mind it on principle, but they should be clear about who's running the trip.

They shouldn't be allowed to advertise it via email and MCPS when it's not an MCPS approved trip. My husband got all excited to see them until I showed him all the information and he realized it was pretty shady.

100 percent this. The teachers are using their public offices for private benefit.

This. It’s weird. We’re at a lower-income MS with a high ELL/FARMS rate and there are two teachers who advertise this quite heavily using their MCPS email. It is an email coming FROM your kid’s teacher.

Complain to the principal. It’s not permitted.

Not true that it isn’t permitted. Plus, MCPS also permits private companies to advertise other opportunities like used piano sales. These are allowed because there’s a tangible benefit to students.

By high school most families who want a piano have one or most give them away for free. A teacher kickback spring break trip for $5k or more is not remotely reasonable. If it were a fundraiser ok but it is not.

If it costs 5k to send one kid on a group accommodation tour. How much do you think it's costs to bring the whole gamely? For some, this is a way to give your child the experience of travel abroad without having the shell out the full amount to bring the entire family. Keep your sour pants to yourself. It's a win win for all involved.

How is getting a free international trip any different? They benefit from it. Completely unethical and sketchy.

Marie Antoinette here thinks $5k per person is reasonable. I take my entire family to Europe for less than that.

Ours is over $1K a day. That's not reasonable.

I cannot imagine they don't get more than a free trip.

Well, I do admit they weren't sleeping in beggar hostiles and drinking water out of the toilet but I'm sure your vacation is nice.
