If I were a right winger I’d be in favor of anything that lets commercial forces run private schools. Like allowing for profit companies to run and profit from school trips. I don’t know why you continue to argue. You’re obsessed with this yet most of DCUM disagrees with you. Read the thread and drop it. |
$5k for a week? That kind of price tag has no place in public schools. |
If the teachers' compensation was worth less than the labor of chaperoning the trips, teachers would not chaperone the trips. The fact they do means it does. This is basic microeconomics. Compensation for the teachers includes, but is not limited to, a free trip, cash, electronics and exotic trips like “Tuscan Spa Week” or “Ancient Peru and Machu Picchu.” https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/watchdog/sdut-company-rewards-teachers-for-school-trips-2011dec26-story.html |

I guess it's hard for parents to understand if they haven't managed a mailing list of their own, but given that these mailing lists are the primary source of these companies' revenue, it's criminal for the schools to see none of the many, many millions of dollars generated through them. It's also incredibly disrespectful for parents - I doubt when they gave their email address, they consented to being solicited.
https://www.jstor.org/stable/30000486 https://neilpatel.com/blog/break-the-law-marketing I wonder if any lawyers can chime in about the legality of marketing to a group of users who did not consent to being marketed to while failing to disclose that said marketing email is in fact an ad. |
OMG, just ignore the marketing if you’re not interested! |
| I took my French-studying daughter to Paris-- twice. We got 2 weeks -- not one-- for 5K. No way would I pay that for a week! |
It didn't include all the meals, special excursions and other things so it probably would be $7K total. |
They can work a side gig, but the issue is pressuring parents to sign up their kids with multiple emails for a trip that is NOT MCPS sponsored and 100% through a private company (which then has a liability issue). |
ABSOLUTELY!! This - 100 percent. |
My daughter’s middle school principal cracked down on them and said they should not be sent out through the school. |
| I'm not happy so I'm not going to allow any happiness for anyone else! That's equity! |
| I couldn't care less about equity. What about liability if it's advertised at school and something happens? Who is accountable? |
My son's football team collects money for the team. By your logic, his school shouldn't have a team since not every parent can afford the fees. School pictures and yearbooks are unaffordable to some. They should be taken out of school especially since they are pushed for kids to participate. Collecting money for field trips shouldn't happen. None of the money goes to the school but to the venue. If you want to be equitable and fair you must remove every single extra from school. |
| None of the fueld trips are equitable. We make just enough to not qualify for support but any extra dollar is a hardship. |
Does your son’s football team cost $5k or more for a week? Wow. |
