No, they don’t always do that. Many posters have clarified that their schools didn’t. If you have an issue with the actions of a specific teacher, report them to MCPS. Don’t try to ruin things for everyone else.

If THIS is troubling you as an abuse of power so much, you must not sleep at night having kids in MCPS. Have are your whistleblowing efforts going on other issues?

This is an equity issue and an important one. Expensive vacations that are not accessible to the vast majority of the school population should NOT be advertised or recruited for through school. There is no “ruining things for everyone”, the troops can go on, they just need to be advertised and recruited for outside of school and without using ANY school resources.

Is financial equity all that matters to you? Maybe schools shouldn’t sponsor anything that isn’t open to all schools. Get rid of tryouts for sports, music, and academic competitions. If the teachers' compensation was worth less than the labor of chaperoning the trips, teachers would not chaperone the trips. The fact they do means it does. This is basic microeconomics.

Compensation for the teachers includes, but is not limited to, a free trip, cash, electronics and exotic trips like “Tuscan Spa Week” or “Ancient Peru and Machu Picchu.”

I guess it's hard for parents to understand if they haven't managed a mailing list of their own, but given that these mailing lists are the primary source of these companies' revenue, it's criminal for the schools to see none of the many, many millions of dollars generated through them. It's also incredibly disrespectful for parents - I doubt when they gave their email address, they consented to being solicited.

$5k for a week? That kind of price tag has no place in public schools.

It didn't include all the meals, special excursions and other things so it probably would be $7K total.

They can work a side gig, but the issue is pressuring parents to sign up their kids with multiple emails for a trip that is NOT MCPS sponsored and 100% through a private company (which then has a liability issue).

My son's football team collects money for the team. By your logic, his school shouldn't have a team since not every parent can afford the fees.
School pictures and yearbooks are unaffordable to some. They should be taken out of school especially since they are pushed for kids to participate. Collecting money for field trips shouldn't happen. None of the money goes to the school but to the venue.
