4 day school week?

Most kids will not utilize the extra day for anything productive. They will not be using it to enrich themselves. They will do what a normal kid does, goof around. There is nothing wrong with that. That’s what I would do if I was a kid. It’s normal.

4 day school days are happening because adults screwed up and there is no money. No one wants to be teachers because the pay sucks. This is a way to entice more teachers. This does not help kids. Studies have shown kids with 4 days weeks do not do as well in math and reading. Period!

Kids don’t need to always be productive. They need to rest and play

Yes the privileged children will get to rest and play. Underprivileged younger children will end up in an overcrowded and chaotic child care center, or at home with a rotation of caregivers or no caregiver at all. Older children will get in trouble on social media, or will be tempted to drop out when their restaurant job dangles a promotion and more hours in front of them, or will commit crimes and get into legal trouble.

There are reasons the original progressive movement didn’t carve out “exceptions” to the then-radical concept of five day free public schooling and the end of child labor. It’s the more important goal to have an educated populace.

If there was a nationwide shutdown of the internet for all children and hell, adults too, I'd go for it. But it won't work in our age of endless distraction.

I would love a 4-day week. My cousin has taught in 2 districts with 4 days weeks -- no burnout, everyone loves it.

You are responsible for your own children.

Great. Can I then get a break on my local taxes since teachers working 4 day weeks should be paid 20% less? Seems fair.

No. They add on time to each school day so don’t worry. The teachers aren’t working less for the same pay.

The law requires us to send our kids to school until they’re 16.

Kids go to school. Adults work. That’s how society works.

We’re not asking you to deal with our kids on the weekends. We’re asking you to provide an education for them during the goddamn workweek.

See how good it did y’all to scream about ‘lazy’ teachers in 2020. You guys will never learn.

Clubs or arts? Best case scenario it would be YouTube. Worst case, would be carjacking and robbery.

Car jacking and robbery, seriously that's what you're jumping too? Because of a slight amount of "boredom". If kids are doing things like that, there's way more to the story.

Kids are doing that RIGHT NOW in DC especially. Are you living under a rock? It wouldn’t get better with a 4 day school week that’s for damn sure.

I didn't deny that it happens. I just don't think behavior that extreme is from boredom.

Perhaps if it was 4 days per week and year round.

The privileged children will be wall to wall in Day 5 private enrichment.

Hopefully, MoCo will not screw up the school budget so this becomes necessary.

That hasn’t happened universally. It’s a choice that communities and families are making to not offer ways to use that day meaningfully. Some districts offer athletics, tutoring, STEAM enrichment, and service learning. Businesses and institutions have offered discounts and special activities on those days. It’s a popular day for scouting, 4H, and JA. And families of young children have podded together to have outings and provide coop childcare.

Nature abhors a vacuum. If MCPS moved to a 4 day schedule, within a month, there would be more than a dozen new businesses offering activities that offer activities doubling as childcare. It would most impact the working poor, but they would also benefit from the longer school days.

Keep treating teachers like garbage on your shoe....and the DMV area will be at 4 days. Down southern VA there are kids in classrooms but learning online....is what it is a teacher exodus.

Anonymous wrote:It's completely about money and trying to keep good teachers. There is a district kind of near where I live that started 4 day weeks this year. Totally about teacher morale and trying to keep them.

My kid is in private and goes 4 1/2 days each week. They have early release (2 hrs early) each Friday. When they are in school they are learning 99% of the time. There are also no random teacher workdays or one off religious holidays. They do all their training and meetings Friday afternoons. I didn't like it at first but now really like it. Gives us an early start on the weekend without losing any of the learning. There is no way this would fly in a public school.

The Nova public schools had half days once a week not long and. Getting rid of it caused big problems for the teachers that have never been addressed properly.

Reinstating it would be great. But a short day once a week for elementary school is very different than a 4 day school week.

If you can't see this, then I don't know what to tell you.

Yes, but it was Monday afternoons. Friday afternoons would have been *so* much better. It’s between weeks, rather than between days 1 and 2. In addition, kids leaving early for trips would have been less disruptive, meetings would have been more relaxed, and you’d have time to really get the room ready for the following week.

Ok but teachers on this board say they are leaving mainly because of two things:
1) lack of support from admin and other features of mismanagement within a district
2) kid behavioral issues

I get there are some parents who are annoying to you, but welcome to every job ever.
