Hilarious comments here.
UVA is very unusual in that it has separate graduate (Darden) and undergraduate (McIntire) schools teaching business. It gets weirder because McIntire actually offers MS programs in accounting, IT, and commerce. McIntire is older than Darden. Darden was started in the late 50s/early 60s to provide MBA education. They recruited faculty from Harvard. Some called it “HBS (Harvard Business School) of the South.” The change to a three-year school is not designed to attract more students. McIntire has more applicants than it has spaces available. The move to a 3-year program is to benefit UVA/McIntire students, who are competing against students from three-year business schools, for very competitive internships that lead to post-graduation employment offers. The move to a three-year curriculum will level the playing field for McIntire students by providing curriculum and advising one year earlier. |

Michigan has announced it is now a direct admit program starting this cycle. Michigan is no longer doing the 2 tiered application into Ross that you described above. Starting this admissions cycle you apply directly to Ross (not LSA) and if you are rejected you are rejected from Michigan. No LSA acceptance to fall back on. |
While Michigan Ross now does have a new direct admit program, you can still apply to Ross as a Michigan sophomore as long as you never applied as a freshman. Furthermore, you first have to apply to Ross through another college at the university. There are others besides LSA. So if you’re not accepted to Ross it doesn’t automatically mean you won’t be accepted into The University of Michigan. “Beginning Fall 2024, Michigan Ross will be a First-Year Admitting Unit, meaning that if you wish to enter Michigan Ross in your first year at U-M, you must select “The Stephen M. Ross School of Business” within the “U-M College or School to which you are applying” section of the Common Application. Preferred Admission will be available through select schools and colleges as a way for you to indicate an interest in enrolling in the BBA program in your sophomore year.” https://michiganross.umich.edu/undergraduate/bba/admissions |
It seems that Michigan is now allowing direct admission into Ross as a freshman. I think that’s admirable. If you really want to major in business and nothing else, it’s best to know up front if you are admitted to that school. There is still the preferred admission route as well, for those who want to go Michigan even if they don’t get accepted into Ross. |
There is a preferred admission route through Engineering, SMTD, Art and Design, and Kinesiology (sport management). However, no preferred admissions route through the LSA, which is a big change. Yes, you can apply to Ross as a transfer from LSA, but they only take 100 kids. About 50% of the internal transfers will be in state, so that leaves approximately 50 transfer spots (25 girls and 25 boys) from OOS. |
