College Football--Big Ten Expansion

I live in midwest, where B1G expansion has been a hot topic for decades. For a long time I seem to recall the 2 names that always came up when expansion was discussed were Texas & UNC. So I don’t get the guy who said B1G wasn’t interested in UNC.

Dark horse to Big 10 is Boston College, which would bring in every TV in New England. That’s another one that has been discussed for a long time. It’s easy to scoff at this one, but it must gnaw at their greedy guts to see a cluster 6 states unsullied by B1G slobber.

Re the Stanford athletes are going to get tired on long plane rides. Yeah, cuz these decision makers are sweating whether the swim team gets their beauty sleep.

Kinda cruel how early in the thread the Midwest geography snobs toyed with the slicker who thought Iowa was in Ames. Congrats to whoever finally stepped forward & put a stop to the tormenting by pointing out Iowa is in Iowa City.

Are you sure about BC? https://www.si.com/college/bostoncollege/football/sports-illustrated-ranks-boston-colleges-conference-realignment-value

The above poster is wrong; BC is NOT a candidate for membership in either the Big Ten or the SEC. Boston is a pro sports town with little interest in college athletics compared to other regions of the country.

The above poster is also wrong about the top two desired teams for Big Ten expansion; yes, Texas was one, but the other is and was Notre Dame, not UNC.

The above poster is also wrong about concerns regarding travel by West Coast schools who leave the Pac 12. It is a widely discussed topic. That is one reason why Oregon & Washington will be joining the Big Ten in 2025 after the addition of USC & UCLA. Expect Standford & UCal-Berkeley to soon follow Oregon & Washington.

Teams not playing elite football [i]now are not joining the Big Ten or SEC. Elite means CFP within the past few years. It’s that simple.

At least 7 ACC schools have investigated exit options. These schools are: Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson, UNC, NC State, FSU, and Miami.

Speculation is that Clemson, FSU, Virginia Tech, and Miami want to move to the SEC. Maybe UNC and Virginia to the more academically minded Big Ten Conference. Maybe NC State to the SEC.

ACC Athletic Commissioner Jim Phillips (former long-time athletics director at Northwestern University) has put his North Carolina home up for sale for $2.5 million despite recently agreeing to a 3 year extension of his ACC contract.

IF the ACC folds, then Notre Dame comes into play. ND is more compatible with the Big Ten Conference than with the SEC regarding travel distances, traditional rivalry opponents, and academics. Also, Notre Dame joined the AAU in June of this year which is a "requirement" for Big Ten membership (although an exception would have been made for Notre Dame due to the value of ND's football program and other compatible attributes regarding location, academics, and traditional rivalries with Big Ten Conference members.

Sure, they want a new conference, that doesn’t mean there will be an option other than Big 12 for most.

(OP here)

Notre Dame to Big Ten Conference could happen sooner than most expect:

https://fightingirishwire.usatoday.com/lists/notre-dame-tv-contract-nbc-college-football-tv-deals/

An article in the Chicago tribune (behind a pay wall) dated June 30, 2023 speculates that Notre Dame might have to join a confrence in 2025 in order to stay competitive financially with Big Ten & SEC schools.

Currently, there are 14 universities in the Big Ten:

Michigan
Ohio State
Penn State
Northwestern
Nebraska
Purdue
Wisconsin
Michigan State
Iowa
Rutgers
Maryland
Minnesota
Illinois
Indiana

Next Year USC & UCLA will become members.

In 2025, possible/likely new members include: Univ. of Oregon, Univ. of Washington, Stanford, UCal-Berkeley, & Notre Dame.

In 2025, possible new members: UNC, Virginia, Georgia Tech.

If all join, then the Big Ten will be a 24 team mega-conference. Easy to divide into 4 six team divisions.

If both the Big Ten & the SEC expand to 24 teams, then the conferences may disassociate with the NCAA.

(OP again)

Currently, like the Big Ten, there are 14 teams in the SEC:

Alabama
Auburn
Arkansas
Georgia
Florida
Kentucky
LSU
Mississippi State
Univ. of Mississippi (Ole Miss)
Missouri
South Carolina
Tennessee
Vanderbilt
Texas A&M

Joining soon: Univ. of Texas & Univ. of Oklahoma

If the SEC is to expand to 24 teams from its current set of 16 teams, then the most likely candidates are:

Florida State (FSU), Clemson, U Miami, & Virginia Tech. Also, NC State, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, maybe UCF (Central Florida), maybe U Memphis, maybe U Cincinnati, or ???

Are you making things up? You cannot be serious that, for example, GA Tech football is anything like Big 10 Penn State, Ohio State, etc.

Georgia Tech has won 4 national championships in football--although 1990 was the most recent.

Georgia Tech is in the heart of the best football recruiting grounds in the country.

Georgia Tech fits in with Big ten academics.

Georgia Tech offers a new TV market to the Big Ten (Atlanta & the South).

Once Georgia Tech joins the Big Ten, the most fertile college football recruiting grounds become more open to all Big Ten teams.

But, yes, this is speculation although it has been discussed & considered over the last few years.

Long ago, Heisman (Heisman Trophy) coached football at Georgia Tech.

If Georgia Tech becomes a member of the Big Ten, it can compete with SEC teams for the top talent in the nation during recruiting season.

True, but neither is Rutgers and the BIG took them.
