Remote work is toast

If your kids can go back to school, you can go back to work.

14:59 PP. I never stopped working, I just stopped going to the office to work. I won’t be really upset if we have to go back to the office like you say, but I promise you I will be getting less work done. And you’ll still pay me the same. Are you sure that’s what you want? If so, why? Schadenfreude?

The time study quoted in the article is quite telling. Wow. I have been skeptical of all these people who say they’re super extra productive with WFH but now also have time to volunteer at kids school, work out, etc. I kept thinking, is it possible not commuting really makes that much difference? Now we know. The key change is NOT skipping the commute, lol.

My purpose isn't to support downtown DC businesses. I'm not going back to hellish 1+ hour commutes just because Potbelly didn't make their sandwich quota this month.

Also, here's a thought for Bowser and the wacky DC Council: Start enforcing laws again. Way too much filth and crime downtown.

Based on how awful parking is off K, people ARE back to work.

Unless you are govt. I have the staff in office and tonight has then to 7pm. In office you can’t leave till work done. I got then all working again. They have choice quit or be fired for cause. I am. Ow working 830 am to 6-630pm 5 days a week in person. At home I barely got 1/3, that work done.

My company owns our buildings mortgage free.

Plenty of feds were a waste of space in person. Doesn't change when working from home.

Since half the people we hired since the pandemic began are not within driving distance of our office, I really don’t see that happening! Changed hiring patterns are what really will make WFH stick.

You are more than welcome to go to the office if you care to do so.

I’ve lived in DC on and off since the late 80s. It has nothing to do with on-site feds (there was no remote work in the 90s and DC was a dump).

Gentrification led to over expanding. My neighborhood alone went from lovely row homes to over priced condos, no play space for families and NINE coffee shops in three blocks. Eventually those young people get married and have kids. They want playgrounds. They want good schools and they want more than just latte and gelato.

I’m talking about downtown. Y’all need to get back here. Stop being selfish hermits in the exurbs and get back into the city in offices where you belong. That’s what you signed up for when you took your job. Stop fleecing the taxpayers.

Nope! My money is spent supporting businesses where I live. If you want to live in DC, then it’s your job to support your local businesses.

My community is thriving and more important for me to support than a place where I don’t live.

LOL. I've been remote for 22 years, and will be until I retire.

Yes, I work for the federal government in project management. My project components are all over the country, and none in DC, so it’s not like going into an office brings me any closer to my work.

Your description of your work environment sounds abusive, doesn’t it? Do you feel a sense of pride in overworking people and firing them if they don’t comply?

It's skipping the commute, time spent packing meals, time spent fussing with hair and makeup, etc. It adds up.

Why are all these supposed managers completely unable to type? I don't even know what PP is saying.
