Likewise for people losing their sh*t about some kids opting out of reading LGBTQ books. Why do you care? |
You know there’s literally nothing about the separation of church and state in the Constitution, right? It’s in the Federalist papers and other writings from the time. But not in the Constitution. |
OK so it sounds like we should all learn as much as possible about it and make an informed decision rather than ban the books or opt out then? |
Of course, except for all of the parent meetings specifically for AAPI parents, and the fact that three of the six languages in which MCPS typically communicates are Asian languages. Invisible except for that. |
Genuinely, my sincerely held Christian beliefs, grounded in traditional Anabaptist thinking, are that the existence of police is immoral. My kid gets to hear about police as community helpers, gets police describing their jobs for career day, etc. I don't get to opt out and I'd be laughed out of court if I asked. I understand that, if I want my kid to believe what I believe, I have to teach it to her and expect that school isn't going to teach exactly what I believe. |
True story: learning isn’t supposed to be enjoyable all the time. Sometimes cognitive dissonance causes the best learning. This is what’s wrong with the premise that kids who live lives in dominant cultures (ie white, straight, etc) shouldn’t be made to feel uncomfortable. Setting aside the fact that those in the minority experience discomfort every day, sometimes the best education derives from experiencing discomfort. |
You used the phrase “virtue signal” so I can already tell you’re kind of a basic dummy who can’t think critically. |
PP you're responding to, and I gave my kid "Underground in Berlin" in response to "Friedrich" to convey what it was actually like to be a Jew in hiding. However, I don't think it would be good for general assigned reading in middle school. https://www.npr.org/2015/08/30/435550677/a-yo...escape-the-holocaust "Friedrich" is historically implausible, others the Jews, and excuses the Germans as a whole - it wasn't the Germans, the Germans were good people, it was those awful Nazis - which is not surprising given when it was written (1961) and by whom (a German who was 20 in 1945). |
You should direct that question to the people who filed the lawsuit. |
+1 agree with you completely |
+1 another It's performative. No substance. |
Or sometimes a kid just doesn't enjoy a book. Not everyone is going to enjoy every book. I, personally, can't stand Of Mice And Men. |
Treating everyone with respect is…not religious. And if it’s your religion to disrespect your fellow humans, your religion sucks. |
We must be inclusive of exclusivity and tolerant of intolerance! Or something. |
Goodness who knew it would be so upsetting to the tolerant denizens of Montgomery County that the children of religious families in public schools might not be forced to read kids books about drag queens! |
