Bride killed hours after ceremony

Sadly knowing todays society, she’ll get 10 years prison, but then get early release after only 1-3 years for “good behavior” and put on probation. The justice system is such trash.

The murderer is on suicide watch, but it’s likely because shes in jail, not because she feels remorse for what she’s done. Her life is over, though - no matter what happens. Even if she gets a lighter sentence, her name will always be connected to this heinous crime.

NP. I don't really understand people who don't understand drunk driving. Is it an East Coast/city thing? An age thing?

In most of the country, including the Carolinas, when you go to a restaurant or bar or club and have a drink, then you have to drive your car home. There's no other real option. It's too far to walk, there's no public transportation. Uber is convenient in DC but in many places, it's not. And leaving your car overnight is not allowed. The stigma has increased and people have started to be smarter about waiting before driving, but being drunk often means not making the best decisions. Is driving drunk the right thing to do? No. I've never done it, but I know many people who have (many of them have become wiser but not all and not always). I understand it.

I don't understand it and I went to a college in the middle of nowhere when there were no cabs at all or Uber and I NEVER drank and drove because I have integrity and respect for others. This girl did not have one drink at dinner and drive home. She was probably black out. Who knows if she even remembers it.

If you can't have a drink and drive then you shouldn't. I'm much older now but at my age and weight I will not drink at all and drive within 4 hours of drinking.

You don’t have to leave DC to see drunk driving. People do it every day right here. People who can easily afford ride shares. It’s defended on DCUM regularly as “just one drink, what’s the problem?”

"I am actually drive better after a drink or getting high because it reduces my anxiety."

Well if it's actually just one drink, for a normal-sized adult, it is not going to put you over the legal limit. So it's not "drunk driving"

No. There are more appropriate treatments for anxiety, and if you’re such as anxious driver that your anxiety impedes your driving, you have no business driving.

Ahh yes, the defense of drinking and driving. There it is. “Just one drink’”. It’s fiiiine.

Some many people here are focused on the drinking and the criminal. What about the poor bride who died in her wedding dress. I cannot even imagine how tragic that would be.

Exactly. The idea that alcohol is a remedy for anxiety, especially when driving, is wildly ignorant and makes me wonder if these people actually ever got an education.

And saw the car coming... they were riding on the back of the vehicle facing the oncoming car. F'ing brutal.

One drink isn't drunk driving. It just isn't. Drunk driving is a BAC of .08. I don't know any adult unless they have a disorder or are absolutely miniature who would have a BAC after one standard drink. Some countries do define drunk driving as anything above a zero BAC but in the US drunk driving is defined as a BAC of .08 or more.

The driver's mom hit and killed a firefighter in 2013. No alcohol involved, but still a tragic coincidence.

Drunk drivers need to be put away for a long time. No apologies, especially in 2023 when there are Ubers/Lyfts, etc. at the touch of a screen.

Excuses in order:

It was a mistake. The driver shouldn't spend his life in jail for a simple mistake.
There was no intent. He couldn't understand the consequences of exceeding the speed limit slightly.
Why are they allowing people to drive golf carts on the road? Roads are dangerous and golf carts and pedestrians should stay away from them.

She should get the death penalty! 40 miles over speed limit, drunk and not her first offence. This was not a mistake! A young woman was murdered by this drunk. A young man's life is destroyed and you call it a mistake?!

Life in prison in solitary confinement or the death penalty. Maybe other drinks would stop driving.

+1. An entire family's life was destroyed by this selfish person. It's not like there is ANYONE that doesn't know the potential consequences of driving drunk, and there is zero way to pick up that first drink and not understand what you are doing BEFORE you even start.

This story literally made me feel sick to my stomach for everyone involved, but especially for her husband.

Do you realize that you are *defending* drinking and driving? Just think about that. What would ever require you to drink alcohol and drive?

You're wrong. You can be guilty of DUI and still be below .08. It's the totality of the situation including driving behavior and roadside tests. But don't take my word for it...

I think it’s safe to say the driver had more than one drink.

I think it’s also safe to say that most people are not impaired after 1 drink, or even 2. Maybe even 3! But I know I’ve not been impaired after a lot of drinks if I’m well hydrated, ate a big meal, spaced the drinks out, etc. but I’ve also been slurring my words and unable to concentrate after 1 drink if I worked out hard, didn’t eat very much, am tired, etc. There’s a level of self awareness and discretion that people need to have and simply saying if alcohol passed your lips you shouldn’t drive OR one drink is always fine are clearly not accurate.

However, it’s also clear that the driver in this case was so plastered that she had passed the point of ambiguity by an order of magnitude and obviously shouldn’t have been driving.

I am not even sure what state of mind and level of impairment it would take for me to drive 65 in a 25, especially in one of those beach towns where pedestrians/golf carts/pets are all over the place at all hours. I think other flaws are exposed in the people who do this other than drunk driving. I’ve had some drunk nights that were real doozies and my risk appetite didn’t really change. I just don’t get it.

Just pointing out - are we 100% sure the drivers of the golf cart, from the wedding, were sober? That they weren't reckless drivers?

I have a house in a golf cart town and have lost my mailbox, several feet off the road, several times now.
