What is your rising HS sophomore doing this summer?

CIT for two weeks
Pre-college program for two weeks (at an Ivy, yes I know this won’t make a difference with admissions even if they wanted to apply, DS researched and really liked the program on paper)
Two weeks vacation travel

Hoping for a job at front half of summer since pre-college and travel are at the end

It’s the exact same in the science community. We all hire each other’s kids in our labs as “interns”. Have research, especially published research, is HUGE for college admissions. Starting a non-profit may have worked 7-8 years ago, but they are no longer seen as anything special.

OP, if you have any connections in the research community, now is the time to use that network. Seriously. Get your child in a lab and get them published. It’s worth more than you realize.

Everyone thinks activity or internship X or Y is HUGE for college admissions...but this is all just conjecture.

I mean, if you think colleges are seeing through the fake non-profit scheme...why wouldn't they see through the fake research scheme.

You would think.

Mine did a research trip on a sailing vessel w/ SEA, worked at her pet sitting business and prepped for ACT last year (one and done in Sep -- phew)!

The research trip was a blend of sailing and oceanographic research and an amazing experience.

Ballet intensive for 3 weeks. Trip to a friend's lakehouse for 1 week. Not sure about the rest; maybe swim team or part time job.

What do you guys mean by “drivers Ed “? I signed up my kid for learners permit test after the school ends, and I am planning to teach him driving in the summer, then after a few weeks I’ll sign him up for a “behind the wheel” class. Am I missing something?

Working with a tutor online on science fair project. The goal is to win at the FCPS science fair and then go on to States.

Volunteering at Childrens National (family member works there)

April is a bit late to get started.

I don’t think the April start date is the issue. I think the issue is that you all had a connection at MITRE and Children’s and mom and dad helped ding and pay for the tutor.

Isn’t the classroom portion included in Grade 10 PE/health class?
