What is your rising HS sophomore doing this summer?

But in all actuality, she'll be a paid intern at my SIL's office. She'll be doing Marketing/Digital Marketing tasks. DD is very excited because she gets to "dress up" and will make $21.50/hr.

Last summer she babysat neighborhood kids and walked dogs. She submitted at least 50 applications but no one would hire someone under 16.

This simply isn't true, even this year.

Do you work every night and every weekend? Why would you want your child to do that then?

Probably because they need the money, PP! Not everyone can afford to send their kid to college on a free ride.

My DS had 3 jobs last summer. He worked at a day camp but he was only hired for the morning shift, which was 7 am-12 pm. He then waited on tables at a local pizza joint in the evenings/weekends. He also assisted his best friend's dad with his lawn & tree service company when he had a day free and they needed help.

His friend's dad saw he was a good worker last year and offered him a job this summer. DS is bummed to not work at the camp but his best friend's dad is paying double the camp's pay and offering 10-12 hour days guaranteed.

So your 15 year old is making up for your shortcomings. Got it.

Again, no 15 year old should work that much.

Mmm'k. Please explain to me why someone with a 4.82w/4.1uw, top 10 in their class, 10 APs with 5s, 1530 SAT, volunteer hours, 2 externships, awards, varsity sport 4 years w/ awards, clubs w/ leadership positions, student government w/ leadership positions, and a longterm part time job was rejected from all VA schools except for VCU?

Rejected: all ivys, Duke, UVA, MSU, UCLA, Stanford, Swarthmore

I did, from 18 until I was 24. Well, I think it was like ... 3 or 4 nights a week. I went to school at night the other nights. When I was in HS, I also worked two jobs during the summer. It's how I earned money.

How many schools is your kid planning on attending this fall?
I fail to see the problem or the rationale behind putting your younger kid on a treadmill.

Summer jobs are awesome. Most kids work hard anyway, why not get paid for it? So many kids, mine included, hustle all day with school, sports, volunteering, etc… Mine wants to make a little cash! Some kids are oriented that way, and some aren’t (yours?)

Rejected from *all* VA schools? Your list suggests they applied to only two, UVA and VCU.

The highest unweighted score is a 4.0. For everyone.
