I did a little research to make sure my memory wasn’t fuzzy. https://weilcollegeadvising.com/admission-rates-30-years-ago/ I’m just wondering what changed.

I feel like Chicago has always been incredibly respected. JHU and Northwestern seem like more recent initiations into this tier.

Northwestern was considered elite (not HYP-level, but still) when I applied to colleges over 30 years ago.

it's mainly a school for rich white folks who major in communications, psychology, theatre.

Lol this is funny because my impression is that it’s a fantastic business school that churns out economists and consultants.

You are unfamiliar with Northwestern. Lots of engineering & chemistry majors. Gets the highest academic rating from the Fiske Guide To Colleges 2023. Very diverse student body.

Nortwestern's campus: North campus is engineering & STEM, while the South campus is liberal arts, communications, music, & theater. Northwestern's Journalism School & theater are considered by many to each be the best in the nation.

oh I forgot journalism, music, art
that's why it's outcome is not so impressive

It’s pretty elite all around. Top 3 B-school. Absolute MBB factory but very respectable in finance too. J-school, theater, etc is what it’s most famous for but kid will have no problems placing into finance from there

T10 is just a word used to describe “elite” colleges — whatever that means. Anyone familiar would be impressed by Rice, WashU, etc, but in these coastal circles it’s really only Ivies + Stanford, MIT, Duke, Northwestern, Chicago, and maybe JHU that people really look fondly at

This!

Usually USNWR, so there would one with LACs too (AWS being the 3 who have been #1 multiple years and never lower than 4, or even below 3 for W).

Just found this article that some might find interesting:

I just asked Jesus. Then ignored his list and went with Satan's list. Jesus was not pleased, but said he understood. Satan's list was more practical

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Stanford
MIT
UPenn
CalTech
Duke
Chicago
John Hopkins/Northwestern/Dartmouth

Duke, Hopkins and NW are often the ones taking turns not being T10. I personally would take Duke out.

Top 10 also really depends on whether you are just talking about undergrad education too. Undergrad oriented Ivies like Princeton and Dartmouth and the top LACs (Amherst, Swarthmore, Williams) would be highly regarded there.
For an overall university, research production and faculty strength based on citations and awards matter a lot more and then schools like Harvard, Stanford, and even Berkeley really stand out.
You can come up with a top 10 for just about anything. Don't believe someone who says the Top 7 or 8 is "set in stone" and we just have to move around a few others. I agree that in 2023 any top 10 should pretty much include Harvard and Stanford but beyond that it is debatable in my book.

The only college ranking that matters:

1. Harvard
2. Everything else.

This subforum has become full of weird status-obsessed strivers. It doesn't matter where your grubby MC or UMC kid goes. Their rich attractive peers coast into colleges like Wake Forest, SMU, USC, NYU, Villanova, GWU or Georgetown — and even large party/football schools in the South – and always end up more successful than your social climbing spawn.

+1 Chicago and Hopkins have no consistency in rankings. Chicago basically optimized themselves only for US News. Schools like Northwestern are consistent across rankings by default because they naturally have great undergrad offerings without needing to play any games
