Sure at Frost, there's clearly a sizable cohort of high-achievers, so the magnet doesn't matter, but at many schools, that's not the case. The magnets provide a strong cohort for many kids who don't happen to live in the bounds of such a school. Frost's success shows that the county's policy to focus on outliers is working since these kids are doing great at their home school.

Agree schools like Frost don't need the magnet. This also frees up more seats for others.

It's clear from Frost's victories with the Science Bowl that the county made a good choice by keeping this sufficiently large high-achieving cohort together rather than sending many to the magnet.

The selection changes seem to be working well. Maybe they can keep them together at Wootton too in order to free up more space @Blair.

First they take magnet opportunity away then they will rezone Wootton kids to crown. These kids are just not going to get the education they need.

The only section going to Crown is the little blip of Washingtonian that somehow goes to Fallsmead/Frost/Wootton but will be walking distance to Crown. Wootton is not over capacity and long term projections don't have it over capacity. So many more high schools are over capacity that will fill up Crown.

Don't know anything about that, but Wootton is in the very northern most corner of its own boundary so most of the students assigned to it are closer to another HS. I get that there may not be a better option but the map looks suboptimal.

MathCounts came up once or twice in this thread. At the state competition today, Burleigh Manor took first, Takoma Park second, Herbert Hoover third. Frost came 6th. The top four finishers who will go to the nationals attend Burleigh Manor, Takoma Park and Dumbarton MS. TP also had three of the top four finishers in the countdown round. TP obviously prepares the kids well for these contests. But because so much of doing well depends on tutoring, coaching, etc., it’s a pretty meaningless signal. But winning does come with bragging rights!

MCPS doesn’t do diversity buses anymore. They have such a shortage on bus and bus drivers that they have focused walking as number 1 in the last 5 years of rezoning.

Funny thing is Wootton has walkers that are bused to RM so I can see if they move any others to Crown and lower capacity, they would bring those walkers back to Wootton instead of busing QO kids 20min to a high school. RM is way over capacity and getting worse.

TP gets the best science and math teachers and the top kids in the county of 70,000 middle schoolers and still can’t win first in these events. And you know all the TP kids have tutors too. Their whole lives are math/science.

2nd and 3rd were from TP, CountDown Finals was TP vs TP

I have a kid in the TP magnet. He’s never had a tutor. And as far as he knows non of his classmates have either. Speaking in general not about the team.
