Frost wins Science Bowl

You can't win them all, but Blair SMCS was never lottery, unlike the MS. Still if it makes you feel better to believe nonsense then go for it.

The 80% lottery isn't going to do them any favors, but the current 8th grade was selected before the pandemic before the lottery.

The admission criteria for the current 8th grade was already loosened with no cogat test

This current 8th was I think one of only two years that were chosen by the most competitive admissions process MCPS has ever used. It was a universal selection year meaning every kid was considered, there was the full Cogat, and the students were ranked. The other class that went through this is now in 9th. 6th and 7th were lottery.

Before the universal screening, magnet students were selected from a smaller pool where only parents in the know nominated their children. The current 8th and 9th graders made it through the more rigorous process.

Lottery is the opposite of handpicked.

True, but as a current TPMS parent, I suspect they've even improved on the lottery process since it started, but my evidence is mainly anecdotal.

Not sure which side are you standing at, but the current TPMS 8th grader did the Cogat and was selected using the local norm. Many of them have qualified for AIME, USACO bronze or silver, and/or among the state tops for sports or all-state orchestra/band. Science bowl was simply not the place the students and the school put most of their emphasis on. Period.

FWIW I agree with you. I don't expect TPMS to win everything and think Frost deserves some credit here also. It's not just about TPMS or that some parents are still mad they can't easily game admissions like the old days.

IME this is a great outcome that shows smart kids exist and can be served at different schools in the district.

It seems like someone is trying to make the point that Frost kids are superior academically to TPMS kids after the lottery. Suspect it's actually true and quantifiable and that's wonderful because who wants to commute to Silver Spring when you're in Rockville or North Potomac?

You are one of these MCPS boosters living in the 90s. Howard County schools have consistently performed better on state tests than MoCo for YEARS now. Get over yourself.

You've got to be kidding. Looking at a bulk average without looking more profoundly is misleading. HoCo may have a nice average but comparing the performance of similar demographics between them, MCPS does much better.

They're kind of ignoring the impact of mass immigration on these bulk averages to assert that our schools are in decline/ In reality, the same kid can do as well or better today than 30 years ago. The same great opportunities exist in MCPS for anyone who wants an excellent education. It's just not a priority for everyone, which is fine.

Is there a club at TPMS that does USACO?

On the contrary, this proves the 2019 reforms, which prioritized outliers by allowing strong cohorts to remain at their home school are working.

LOL. Anytime Frost beats TPMS on an academic competition, its boosters come on DCUM and blow the horns, as if they have won the World Cup.
I guess when you beat the big dog, you have got to let everyone know.

I think you have a point there.
