Teacher apparently assaulted at Magruder

Because we had the first school shooting in county history.
Because there is a continued culture of violence at the school.
Because teachers deserve better than being physically assaulted at work.
Because the schools kicked the SROs out so that they could cover stuff up like this more easily.
Because they promised better communication and transparency after Dre got shot.

Correction: The County Council kicked out the SROs.

Nope. Elrich . Council had a bill but let it die after Elrich pulled them in March 2021.

The kid who got shot was in the halls skipping/late to classes all time before the attack. He skipped class with two friends to meet up in the bathroom after lunch for the incident. He continues to be in the halls a lot during class time but perhaps has a flash pass or something for anxiety/medical reasons.

One would think the county would tighten up the skipping/late/hall use of the students for safety reasons. But can’t have the kids feeling hurt or something like that.

Skipping is a huge problem at my school, but we lack the staff to combat it. We would need to hire 2-3 additional security guards whose sole duty would be to sweep the halls constantly and detain any student without a pass, then have an administrator call a parent to come pick the student up. Repeat every day until the parents get sick of having to leave work at 10:10 AM to pick up Larlo up because he can’t sit in Math 7 for 45 min.

And the main reason students tell us they skip is because they aren’t allowed to use their phones during class.

MCPS should follow these schools that have basically locked the cell phones. Kids are made to put phones in pouches, and then unlocked by staff when school ends.

Several schools have done it.

Hallways often smell of pot because kids are getting high in the bathrooms. MCPS has eliminated student accountability. The only thing I know that will get a kid detention at my school is if they are involved in a physical fight. Then the kid gets at home suspension for 3 days

Why are we allowing this nonsense?

equity. Can't suspend those kids because it would make the numbers look bad. We must first suspend equal amounts of white kids before we can suspend any black/brown kid for nonviolent offenses.

Only if the do this for students who have violated cell phone policy. Please don’t punish kids who DO follow the rules. We have enough of that in MCPS.

My kids was at RM for the recent lockdown and I appreciated having her phone. She doesn’t misuse it and is a good student (I know because we watch her screentime and she gets her work done).

They had to close off the bathrooms at RM due to bad behavior. Instead of punishing the kids who behave badly, all the kids get punished. It’s wrong.

Target the kids who are causing trouble and support the kids who want to learn.

Sounds like BS. They skip because they CAN and because they want to.

Enforce consequences for missing classes. Hire more staff for that purpose instead of some of the other useless initiatives MCPS implements.

The last time I tried to call security to confiscate the phone, the kid walked out of the classroom and refused to give up the phone. On his own he immediately went to the office and demanded to be picked up by his parent rather than give up the phone. I realized that in a lot of cases confiscating the phone is actually more work for me later to catch a student up. I still insist they not use them, but I have backed down from confiscating due to the issues created. Sucks though. Part of my desire to be a teacher is being killed off just by the cell phone policy itself.

Agreed. My kid was in the magruder shooting lockdown and did NOT have his cell phone. (gym class). It was gut wrenching to wait HOURS to find out if he was OK or not.

I feel for teachers. I wish I had a solution. But lockdowns and shelter in places are becoming the norm.
