The kid who got shot was in the halls skipping/late to classes all time before the attack. He skipped class with two friends to meet up in the bathroom after lunch for the incident. He continues to be in the halls a lot during class time but perhaps has a flash pass or something for anxiety/medical reasons. One would think the county would tighten up the skipping/late/hall use of the students for safety reasons. But can’t have the kids feeling hurt or something like that.
Skipping is a huge problem at my school, but we lack the staff to combat it. We would need to hire 2-3 additional security guards whose sole duty would be to sweep the halls constantly and detain any student without a pass, then have an administrator call a parent to come pick the student up. Repeat every day until the parents get sick of having to leave work at 10:10 AM to pick up Larlo up because he can’t sit in Math 7 for 45 min. And the main reason students tell us they skip is because they aren’t allowed to use their phones during class.
MCPS should follow these schools that have basically locked the cell phones. Kids are made to put phones in pouches, and then unlocked by staff when school ends. Several schools have done it. https://6abc.com/philadelphia-school-district-cell-phone-pouch-yondr-pouches-overbrook-high/12351891/ https://www.npr.org/2018/01/11/577101803/a-schools-way-to-fight-phones-in-class-lock-em-up https://www.wrdw.com/content/news/CA-school-tests-pouch-that-locks-away-students-cell-phone-until-school-dismissal-556804481.html https://aleteia.org/2022/09/26/the-15-gadget-thats-eliminating-cell-phone-use-at-schools-and-concerts/
Only if the do this for students who have violated cell phone policy. Please don’t punish kids who DO follow the rules. We have enough of that in MCPS. My kids was at RM for the recent lockdown and I appreciated having her phone. She doesn’t misuse it and is a good student (I know because we watch her screentime and she gets her work done). They had to close off the bathrooms at RM due to bad behavior. Instead of punishing the kids who behave badly, all the kids get punished. It’s wrong. Target the kids who are causing trouble and support the kids who want to learn.
