So I'm getting from this thread that it would make sense for my kid to wait to take health as a full year offering in 11th grade or 12th grade instead of taking Health A this summer and figuring out where to fit in Health B at a later point. Ugh. That kind of sucks. It would be nice to just get it out of the way in one summer.

My 9th grader signed up to take the full year of Health next year in 10th.

I have a 10th grader and have heard that it is painful to take Health in person for even a semester. I would at least have your kid take A over the summer online.

The tech requirement is two courses, so two summer classes in that category would be necessary.

Just to clarify: the tech requirement is one *credit,* which is two semesters (labeled A and B).

But each summer school session only covers one semester of a given course. So they’d need to take the A and B semesters of a tech course over two different summer sessions.

This requirement seems like a bit much, or am i missing something?

It's a MD state graduation requirement:
Computer science, engineering, or technology education — one credit that includes the study of computers and algorithmic processes or the application of knowledge, tools, and skills to solve practical problems and extend human capabilities

I stand by my statement then. There are enough requirements, I think they should have a little more flexibility with their few electives. Maybe it will be easier to get it all done than it seems right now ( oldest is registering for WJ this week).

What is painful about it? The work load, subject matter or is it cringy?

My kid took the tech requirement class in middle school (FOCS).

According to my DD, the subject matter as easy, but the volume of "busy work" assignment was extremely high. She said it felt like elementary school with tons of "worksheets" on definitions and the like.

You can take health and the tech credits as online courses during the school year as well: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/onlinelearning/courses/index.aspx

Takes longer than over the summer, but it’s another option. They don’t offer Health B yet, but my current 9th grader just registered to take health A this spring so they can try to fit health B in during a future year or summer.

That is good to know! Thank you!

A bit off topic, but does anyone know if my magnet HS kid can enroll in summer school at our local HS? The plan was to take Health A/B this summer, but we can’t manage transport to/from the magnet HS in summer. (I’m assuming magnet buses don’t operate in summer?)

Kids have jobs and other priorities mover the summer. They really need to make this optional for 2025 at this point. My daughter already taking a useless class to balance out health A and now has to find another useless class to balance out health B. Most kids would have done A and B as a full yet but too late to do that for many.

That was her fault for not waiting until 11th grade to take Health. You knew it was a full year requirement for class of 2025 in 8th grade, prior to registering for any HS classes.

Not for the class of 2025. This was added well after they they registered for freshman classes, and B wasn’t ready during their (current) sophomore year. They had no way to plan for this.

This. 2025 grads can only do this in 11th or 12th. my kid now has to drop Economics to take health B and something silly like ceramics or hip hop.if B was offered earlier she could have combined them both as a full year. cant do summer since she works and will be prepping for.SAT.

Yes, it's very frustrating for the class of 2025. But can't your kid take a half-year of Economics (macro or micro) to go with health B? What did she combine with health A to make a full year? Just asking as I look ahead for my kid (class of 2026) who wants to get at least health A out of the way this summer but wants to know what would happen if they couldn't fit health B into a future summer.

That should be fine. I don’t think all schools will offer all courses anyway, so you should be able to choose. And A, at least, will be offered online.

My DD took A online last summer. The required Zoom component was pretty minimal, and the offline stuff was just a ton of busy work. She’s dreading having to sit through B in person this summer. Highly recommend doing whatever they can online.

I’m reviewing the summer school course catalog and I do not see that health part B is offered as a course, only part A. Since it is now a requirement to have one full credit, will MCPS typically add required courses to the summer school catalog?

Are summer school classes meant as remedial courses or can Students enroll to get ahead?

Some summer school classes are for grade recovery. Others are for "original credit," which means that students can take them if they haven't taken the class before.

The registration form is clear which summer classes cannot be taken for original credit.

Being told that Health B will not be offered this summer.

She could do them as generally MCPS offers one day and one night class. I would have her do it in the summer.
