Mcps High School summer school

Anonymous
I have a two-part question and it might be too early to think about this.

I’m reviewing the summer school course catalog and I do not see that health part B is offered as a course, only part A. Since it is now a requirement to have one full credit, will MCPS typically add required courses to the summer school catalog?

Are summer school classes meant as remedial courses or can Students enroll to get ahead?

I don’t think the new course had been developed as of last summer. I would hope it would be added for next summer. But I’m not up on the latest as my kid is a junior and doesn’t need it. Health is typically taken in summer by kids who want to get ahead and focus on other classes during the year.

I read Health B won’t be ready for summer school until 2024.

Thank you. This new requirement is putting a wrench in course selection.

My 10th grader took Health A online last summer. My understanding is that Health B will be offered in-person only this summer, but the virtual option won’t be available until summer 2024.

This is what they said at the beginning of last summer, but I sincerely hope they fix this and roll it out virtually this summer. It is so annoying that the class of ´25 is subject to taking a class that was not even ready until their sophomore year.

My prospective IB student had their IB coursework and graduation requirements all planned out, until the state threw this wrench into the works, requiring a new class that wouldn’t be fully ready for an undetermined period of time.

Wouldn’t be a huge problem to take both during two different summers, except my kid is planning to apply for CIT/camp counselor jobs, and it’s really difficult when you can’t plan ahead because summer school schedules aren’t released until long after camp job applications are due.

I feel this, PP. I think the State has been very non-responsive to cries of foul from the class of '25 regarding this new course requirement. Did other districts get their act together on health B faster?

Summer school classes can be for remedial or to get ahead.

And what is the purpose of requiring the extra .5 of health class? What are they covering in the extra class that they’re not covering in the first one?

New state law, additional information.

Yes, thank you so much for providing this! I just read through the HS guidelines and they seem to cover all the bases. Do they have this for any other state-required coursework?

Same for my IB kid. Definitely frustrating.

Is there any further word on availability of Health B this summer? Our HS has course selection next week. (!!) The information says that Health B must be taken during Jr or Sr year as a one semester class. We have no room in the schedule for a one semester class that leaves the other semester hanging; phys ed is done!
