They revised the calendar graphics on the last three pages:

https://go.boarddocs.com/mabe/mcpsmd/Board.nsf/files/CKDJYM4F7A19/$file/221022%202023-2024%20Draft%20School%20Year%20Calendar%20Memorandum%20-%20UPDATED.pdf

The policy committee agreed to send all 4 scenarios to the full board to be discussed on the 25th. There was a suggestion that the 5-day weekend in February around President's Day be considered for more of the options. Perhaps in lieu of the 2-week winter break.

Thanks for the new link PP. In the past, when they thought about starting a full week earlier, they announced it the year before to give families time to plan. They did not announce it less than a calendar year out. If they want to start that much earlier, they should plan further ahead. Of course, the change did not happen last time because of the Hogan Ocean City order.

I don't really understand why C starts only 2 school days earlier, and yet ends 6 calendar days earlier. The June 18 end date, which they have put on Option D (the only one with the Monday before Labor Day start date) is too late, IMO. They should be shooting to end as close to Memorial Day as possible.

I am also not a fan of the extended Thanksgiving Break. For those of us who work, who takes a full week at Thanksgiving, and then another full week at the end of the year? The half days are enough of a pain.

Option C is Thurs. Aug. 24, 2023 through Wed. June 12, 2024, and Option D is Mon. Aug. 28, 2023 through Fri. June 14, 2024.

I want the one that starts the earliest. Ends the latest. Has 0 half-days. And none of these crazy two week breaks that nobody but teachers get.

Since teachers aren’t paid over the summer, two week paid vacations during winter and spring break are the same as what other salaried professionals enjoy.

Don't know any salaried professionals that get 2 weeks at Xmas and Spring break. Think you have to work for the county, federal gov or a bank for that kind of slackness.

Taking a vacation when you want to spend time with your family is “slackness”? You are either a horrible boss or someone who has been brainwashed by the “grind mentality” on social media. Your child will remember that you willingly worked all of his Winter Break and let your vacation days pile up until they expired.
Most salaried professionals get to choose when they take their vacations. Let’s let teachers do that then.

Why won't the link load?! I want to see the options and then get really pissed off about all of them!

Or just about anywhere in Europe. Most countries mandate at least 20 paid vacation days a year, with some guaranteeing as many as 30 days.

PP doesn’t care about that. They are in love with ‘Murican way of exploiting workers to enrich billionaires.

Because half days count he same as full days on the calendar.

Yeah, you're all exploited, which is why you have the highest material consumption in the world. If you prefer the European way of life... small homes, public transit, rationed college and health care, while enjoying longer vacations and better bread, go for it.

Aww, another poster who hates their own life so they take it out on others who have better schedules. Your bitterness is showing. Pitiful.

Extra days for Thanksgiving and Christmas but no option at all for time off for Passover.

I'm a salaried professional who gets 45 days of PTO to take whenever I want. Not sure what your problem is, but it sounds like you just have a terrible job, so you feel the unnecessary need to disparage others. Also, Christmas break for MCPS is HARDLY two weeks. Maybe go back and learn some elementary math along with humility. You're a pretty pathetic person.

Many holidays not represented by time off. Students can just take the time without consequence, but it’s harder for staff who must secure a sub to take a personal day. Subs are as scarce as hens’ teeth these days.

Right, and this is one that I assume plenty of people take off or travel for.

Students are allowed to take time off for religious observance without penalty. They will need to make up work, though.

I just saw that Passover 2024 is about a month after Easter. It is usually the same week as Easter, but the lunar calendar doesn't cooperate in 2024.

I suggest writing into BOE.

Possibly 10 years ago, Passover was a month of so after Easter. There were no additional days off. But this was before BOE put in every religion's holiday into the schedule.

I would love a 2 week winter break. There are many international families in MCPS who would love a 2 week break so they can travel abroad
