+1 I think they worded the survey so poorly (as usual). People didn’t realize that if they wanted those extra days off, that we’d have to tack them on somewhere. Sure people might want the whole week of Thanksgiving off because people love any days off, but do they want it so much that school goes all the way until June 18? I doubt it. I literally can’t believe they aren’t even offering the regular default as an option. These are all flawed in my opinion. I don’t want an earlier start or a later end. Fine if I am ultimately in the minority but I actually bet I’m not. |
| A !! 2 weeks of winter break will be awesome!! |
They didn’t even pick the right two weeks. They are so bad at this. |
no refining needed, throw out a-c and go with d. the rest are absurd. |
| Is it common anywhere to have the whole week of Thanksgiving off? I’m already surprised that the Wednesday is totally off. Thanksgiving is one day! Thursday! It’s nice to have the Friday to do a long weekend and maybe a half day on the Wednesday. But this is not a “whole week” holiday. Even if you are flying (which many are not), you get plenty of time between Tuesday night/Weds and Sunday. Thanksgiving is an American holiday so it’s not like people are flying out of the country to celebrate it. |

The 2 week winter break is dumb. Kids are in school the entire week leading up to Christmas then off for an entire week the first week of January.
A full week off for Thanksgiving is dumb too. The Wednesday should be a half day. Parents can take their kids out if needed. This is about the sub shortage. |
| C & D are essentially the same (minus an half day here and there) except you are starting two days early vs going two days late so you can do the full week Thanksgiving. Which is ironic because in their survey making Thanksgiving a full week was the least popular response! So why are there multiple scenarios for this when very few people had a preference for this priority? |
It’s especially dumb because Christmas happens to fall on the very first day of the two week winter break they propose. What is the point of the second week? |
Do you think they are doing the first week off in January because of travel/kids getting sick from the travel and then they need to take the first day off anyway? |
That’s funny because D is the only option that would make me mad. I don’t want the whole week of Thanksgiving off and I think our school years have been going too far into June. It’s not hard to start a week earlier when you’ve just had 9 or 10 weeks off, but the longer we keep going after Memorial Day, the more burned out everyone is from the long slog from Spring break to the end of the year. I’m surprised you’re willing to give up all PD days. |
| I greatly prefer starting earlier and ending earlier. Kids learn nothing after Memorial Day |
| Make it D, baby! |
D is the worst. Ending on Tuesday, 6/18? Who’s even going to show up those last 2 days? |
PD days = meetings admin has planned. I’ve spent 25 years sitting in PD meetings. Give me freedom (individually managed time w/o students) or give me death (no breaks from the kids). |
A and B starts are actually closest to “same as usual” from before the Hogan mandate to start after Labor Day to appease his Ocean City pals. Sports won’t shift earlier - that’s set by the state athletic association. An earlier start is more in line with schools and universities across the country. For HS students an extra week at the start of the year is much better than the dead time in June. |
