I guess I really don’t understand why Velma needs to “come out” in a kids Halloween cartoon. Why does she need to identify as anything? Is her crush on a girl really need to be part of the storyline for a kids holiday movie? No qualms with whatever people decide it right for them sexually, this just seems like an odd choice for a Halloween storyline

+1.

I know the show paired Fred and Daphne, but when i was a kid I don't remember them being a couple. It's a cartoon. for kids. Just let it be a cartoon for kids without any romantic relationships.

And I'm also going to spout the unpopular opinion that LGBTIA is being overdone/oversaturation. Especially the transgender piece. It's a small slice of the population. Sort of unrelated, but it's the same thing behind Drag Queen story hour - why?

In the same vein, lesbians make up at least 10% of the population. Do more than 10% of the movies your kids watch have a lesbian character? Is there a reason that a single lesbian character upsets you so much?

Can you name a single major children’s movie with an openly transgender character? How is zero movies overrepresentation, exactly?

Right? She was always LGBT. It was clear subtext.

Sorry, I meant that Velma being LGBTQ was clear subtext. I picked up on it even as a child.

No way I did and never even thought about it. Or MJ. I didn’t even know what marijuana was until I was a teen. I guarantee most elementary kids were not wondering what sexual orientation any of the characters were.

Even I, a relative innocent, knew Scooby and Shaggy were super high all the time, and that Scooby snacks were drugs.

I feel like a dummy that I didn't realize Velma was gay. I always identified with her - I kind of look like her. I wonder if this is going to lead me to some self-examination....

Right? Sigh. I look a LOT like her. And I always wished I looked like Daphne because she was obviously the pretty one. I didn't read Velma as gay, I read her as desexualized and didn't want to to ID with her because I didn't want to be undesirable. Yes, that's super judgy, that was growing up with 90s beauty standards. I don't know whether to read making her gay as a relief because representation matters, or a kind of condescending "it's cool that boys don't like her, she's not into them either" message.

+1 Exactly. Another brunette with glasses here. (I once wore an orange sweater to work and a coworker said “hey, it’s Velma!”) This just feels like it’s embracing tired old stereotypes.

The rightwing content they consume on TV and social media features a lot of LGBTQ “characters” and that’s why they think there is “over saturation.” They are getting bombarded daily due to their media choices.

The rest of us not consuming this crap are bewildered by their criticisms of LBGTQ existence.

Omg, brunettes, you are not lacking in heterosexual representation. There are plenty of brunettes with glasses of the “sexy librarian” stereotype. There’s nothing stereotypical about a brown haired woman with glasses and a mini skirt being a lesbian. She’s not a butch or masculine woman.

I'm sorry but who cares.

If this bothers you don't have your kid watch it.

There are so many other issues to worry about this is a nothing burger.

It really is nothing.

Try putting your energies into volunteering as a family for a food bank. Fixed it now no TV time. LOL

Ever seen the episode of 30 Rock where Jack sets Liz up with a woman because he assumes she’s a lesbian? I’ve seen many posters on DCUM suspect that Tina Fey is clearly gay, presumably because…why, exactly?

Probably because she’s not very feminine? The same reason there’s running jokes that she’s not a woman. She serves as best man at more than one wedding. She can grow a mustache, she always says she’s really a girl and “that doctor was a quack.” It’s not because she has brown hair and glasses.

I consume little to no rightwing media content and feel like the backlash, most lately against transgender individuals is scary and unacceptable. I also feel like it's content very much being pushed at teens and tweens based on my own personal experience with my teen and tween.

Agree. No problem with people who are LGBTQ but yes it feels frickin everywhere particularly trans / pronoun issues.

Why do we have to go out of our way *specifically* reveal the sexuality of the lesbian character *only*? No other characters in SD reveal their sexuality, no? If we are going to reveal the sexuality of the characters, then why should Velma be the only one to reveal? The other characters should confirm their orientation as well, which likely includes straight heteros. I mean hey, if you are going to make sexuality important in SD, you need to reveal for every character in SD if you want to be truly inclusive.

This is a flimsy diversity attempt. All of these lame diversity pushes are going to stupendously backfire once people have had enough and get fed up with the forcefeeding. 99% of diversity in media these days is contrived, shallow crap to check a box off. They have to commandeer characters and stories and change the race of the character, the sex of the characters, their sexuality,.....it never ends. Diversity is now formulaic crap garbage. It is an sttempt that is the equivalent to the trend of sriracha in everything that lazy chefs did for a while and fizzled out. Coming up with novel stories and characters who just happen to be diverse is hard, therefore we get lazy, unauthentic attempts like this that take over a children's character and make sure they jam it down the throats of children. Why is there sooooooooo much attention on over representing all of these identity groups when they make up such a small fraction of the country?

All 4? At the same time? How is that possible?

I thought they always depicted her having a crush on Daphne

The "reveal" here is that she blushes about a girl. There's plenty of that kind of thing in Scooby-Doo for other characters. Shaggy has had several girlfriends over the years, Fred and Daphne date in the live action movie and the Mystery incorporated animated series. Scooby himself has a girlfriend (a greyhound) in an episode of one of the 00s series.
