I can't even begin to list the crazy shit they occupy their mental energy while having nothing interesting to contribute. At least no one will be up at 4am tomorrow, making noise and then sitting for hours staring at the wall until we all wake up.

I hope you sent 4 am wake up person down to the beach to set up your space and drive the 10 am get to the beach and expect waterfront space people crazy….

No, silly, the beach stuff can only be set up between 9:30-10. Because that's how he's been doing it for 50 years. From 7-9:00, we have to hem and haw quietly about the kids and parents sleeping in (why would you sleep in on vacation, lazy bums!)? And as soon as you wake up, he jumps up to start talking about whatever 1980s slogany business conference wisdom might be pertinent for the FIL to share to try to coach and "fix" the problem perceived from last night's conversation. It's real fun when you've had no coffee, the dog needs to go out, etc.

Oh man, you’re a saint. I would have told him to buzz off years ago.

I’ve been taking care of them while DH spends time with his parents, and ILs are upset that I’m not bringing them downstairs/out to the beach more. We’re doing what we can, and I haven’t asked to leave early or anything but…they’re sick.

MIL just said to me, “I don’t know what you’re doing up there, Jill, to keep them sick” and then fake-laughed. I want to punch her in the face. My kids being sick is not funny, and me taking care of sick kids away from home isn’t a vacation for me.

If she comments like that again look her straight in the eye and tell her it’s not funny, and she should be thanking you for taking care of the kids to give DH the opportunity to spend time with them. What a massive B.

Maybe your kids will give Grandma Covid and you will have the last laugh.

OP here. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, ever!

We’ve been back, and all was fine. DD had a PCR test that was negative and overall just had a nasty bug. She still got enough beach and fun time to have a proper vacation, and honestly it was kind of a nice break for the two of us to stay inside reading and watching movies together for one of the days instead of schlepping down to the beach again, some more.
