Unhappy that "y'all" is everywhere

You'd actually prefer "yinze" to "y'all"? What on earth?

The nice thing about y'all is that even if people aren't from the south, they know what you are saying. My DH is from PA so I'd recognize yinze but none of my family from California or Texas would -- it's a micro-regionalism and not even all people from PA use it. Whereas y'all is common from Georgia to Louisiana to Texas to Florida.

That's why y'all caught on. It's useful and easy to understand. You all. Y'all. No interpreting necessary.

Very weird take.

"You all" works well.

While it would effectively communicate the meaning, contractions are more convenient. That’s why nobody says “of the clock”.

I'm from Alabama and stopped saying y'all in college.

But, I'm an age of expansive pronouns and sensitivities around gendered language, Y'ALL is remarkably helpful as an inclusive plural. Who knew there might be a place for redneck vernacular in mainstream culture?!

I am with you, OP.

Naming a group of professionals y'all is like saying, "I find myself to be superior to you. I plan to treat you poorly. Don't expect me to pay you what you're worth."

Anonymous wrote:I think AAVE is an integral part of American English. So many words come from AAVE through music and art. It is inevitable that y'all would become part of lexicon.

Some will bring up cultural appropriation and mockery. While these are valid concerns, rap, hip-hop and other types of art associated with Black people is a major part of American culture. Also Southern white culture has had a major impact as well through Bluegrass and country.

The wiki page suggests that the reason anyone associates it with AAVE is because Black southerners brought it north during the Great Migration, but that it is really just an American Southern term, and might have originated with the Scots-Irish in the South.

What is the attraction to people who either are able to speak standard English or have their own native regionalisms? I would vastly prefer "youse guys" or even "yinz" if there were some reason to choose a folksy When people adopt "y'all" on purpose, what is the image they're aspiring to?

What is “yinz”? I have never heard this.

Signed a Memphian.

Short for you inz

Said fast it is yinz

Sounds like jizz.

In writing, "Hi all," works as well as "Hi y'all'. In speaking, "everyone" seems to work. I still use "guys" too.

Why does the OP care what slang other people use? Every person is held accountable for only their words, so it's not like OP is going to level 50 grammar hell just because too many people say "Y'all".

I grew up in MD. We all said it, just without a southern accent.
Anonymous
Nothing is worse than "yinz." Nothing.
Anonymous
I hate it. I grew up with an accent and I've worked very hard to drop it. I say you all (i.e. would you all like to drop by around 10?).

Whether it's "y'all" or "all y'all," it's still better than DCUM speak, which is to refer despairingly to "you people."
