SIL travels with her own cocktails

OP on disguise 🥸.

LOL! Seriously. Why is it that OP and her family members aren’t alcoholics even though they “need to drink to have a good time” with beer and wine at these BBQs?

I mean, was she drinking a bottle a night or something? Was she drinking while driving? Or was she enjoying a glass of wine and some charcuterie? Do you…not get the difference?

Ha, I don’t drink and I do this. Well, I don’t bring G & T, although sometimes I bring AF G & T, but I make myself delicious mocktails. Most people have sucky AF options and I’m not drinking plain water or seltzer when everyone else is having delicious beer and wine. So I come packing my own. If I’m with a group of jerks, I’d use an excuse like SIL. If I’m with normal human beings, I just tell them what I brought. Sometimes I bring extra so people can try how great AF options can be, without the hangover.

Does your friend need a travel companion? She/he sounds like she knows how to make a road trip fun.

So, OP, SIL should drink plain water at a BBQ where everyone else is having beer and wine because you dislike her and are a bad host?

I mean, no kidding.

I hate G&Ts a lot. I think they are gross. I love wine.

My BIL loves G&Ts -- not even a headache thing that's just his drink of choice. Before they come over I make sure I have tonic water, his fav gin brand and nice fresh limes. And I text my SIL to see what she would like bc she doesn't have a signature cocktail like he does.

That's called being a considerate, caring hostess.

Why would this concern you? Do you never enjoy wine and charcuterie at home?

I like a drink and some nuts, olives, or cheese during the cocktail hour. I bring them with me when I’m on a road trip because it’s easier than sourcing them on the road for an Airbnb, and much cheaper than room service at a hotel. I also travel with coffee and an Aeropress and cream and sugar. Should I be concerned that I have a coffee problem?

Are you incredibly bored with your life? That’s the only explanation.

Now I’m going to plan a road trip around wine & a charcuterie board.

I'd be interested in your AF drink recipes. Please consider an AMA in the Food forum!

Anonymous wrote:Is this weird? My family are wine drinkers. If we all hang out together, usually there is beer or wine. We had a Memorial Day barbecue weekend last night and she brought a thermos of her own premixed gin and tonic. She says wine and beer give her a headache. Wouldn't you just not drink in this case, instead of BYO to a family gathering where it isn't offered?? I wonder about saying something to my brother just to check in. Like why would you travel with your own booze thermos??!

I think it’s weird your family hasn’t accommodated her tastes. I can’t imagine not having what makes my SIL feel included available for her. Especially if it’s as simple as gin & tonic.

+1 It feels rude that you know she likes g&t yet you don't provide it. She's found a solution that works for her and yet here you are questioning it. You seem more of the weirdo than your SIL, OP.

Agree.

I stock diet tonic just for my SIL.

I guess I find the optics of a thermos a little tacky, a little desperate housewife soccer mom on the bleachers. Why not just purchase cocktail ingredients and bring them? Someone else might enjoy a different drink and it doesn’t look quite so clandestine. If you have special dietary needs, bring a dish to share. No one likes the keto weirdo guest who starts unpacking their own personal Tupperware at a dinner party.
