I heard 12

12? Yale never did this before to Langley or McLean. Why is this year so special?

I believe the 6 and 8. Pretty sure the 12 poster is just poking fun.

Pretty sure it is 8

Definitely 14

Actually, it was 26.

And Columbia, UChicago, Harvard, CalTech, Rice, Berkeley, Stanford, etc. Lots not listed on the IG that are in the Saxon Scope.

Wow. Great year for Langley. Are college admissions always this strong?

What really talks is the 5 % freed and reduced lunch population.

They are never that strong. It’s just another FCPS high school, but with wealthier kids.

$$$ talks, bruh.

This is public school. The kids aren’t that rich. I’m not saying they are poor but not everyone is rich.

How do you suppose this supposed money got them into Yale?

Legacy, connections, costly private counselors. Our Langley friends are way rich compared to us!

Not that I'm suggesting money alone got them in. I'm sure they are well qualified and will do great there. It just helped them stand out from the middle class well qualified kids.

We give a measly $1000 per year to our T25 alma mater. That is not going to help. I would not say we have any connections even though we have lots of friends and colleagues who attended T25 colleges. We have no hook.

That being said, our kids are way stronger than we ever were back in high school in all categories.

What does this matter in college admissions? I feel like the people who also talk about the free lunch stat aren’t actually free lunch themselves.

I was once a free lunch kid. We now have a high income and live in McLean. We live here because of the good public schools and we like our house and close proximity to DC.

Thank you for this thread. We were considering sending our kids to private school instead of Langley. Dh wanted to keep them in public. He always says he doesn’t want to pay $40k per year for 3 kids for schools that have the same or worse college admissions than our local public.

unless your alma mater explicitly doesn't look at legacy, you have a hook at your alma mater, just like all your friends and colleagues. no need to downplay it here.

No, not at all. In a typical year, Langley don't send more than 6 to HYP combine. Sending 6 to just one school this year? I find it hard to believe.

Just remember that’s it’s harder to shine at Langley. You’re reading about the top 10% of the class. “Everyone” is in honor society and in a class of 400, leadership roles are harder to get. A weighted 4.0 puts you at 50% , which isn't persuasive in admissions. Some colleges seem to understand this and judge differently (OOS), some don’t (UVA.)

It’s a good school but IMO, there’s far too much emphasis on AP rigor for the sake of rigor, and not enough on learning. Though, to be fair, that’s a public school problem in general. If I could have afforded private for our DC, it would have been better for them: mentally and academically.

In a typical year, Langley doesn't send six kids to HYP combined. If they are sending 5 or 6 to Yale this year, the kids deserve congratulations, but it's definitely an outlier.

I have no doubt that those Langley kids are qualified like many top kids in other schools, my point is why Yale accepted so many kids from ONE school. It may happen to TJ, but never happened to other base schools.
