Formula shortage?

Does anyone know if there's anything we can do to help moms who are struggling if we don't have any formula on hand to share? I'm in DC, so I don't really have a government representative to call but I'm happy to try calling everyone else's if anyone thinks it would help..

Please try calling who you can! Mayor’s office even. We need to keep shouting until they finally fix the problem.

This is the best most thorough analysis of the formula shortage that I have read to date. We need to fix the structural issues that lead to this https://mattstoller.substack.com/p/big-bottle-the-baby-formula-nightmare?s=r

I think most people have figured out that the monopoly was one of the major contributing issues and that the federal government is the second.
I don't even think the FDA is necessarily dragging it's feet as much as it is mired in their own process and policies in trying to respond to a crisis and generally just manager anything.
I feel terrible for parents facing this issue and it must be amazingly stressful.

The FDA is also working on EUA for infant vaccines. You want infant food or medicine in a very stressful year? Pick. You can't get both for the entire population. I actually feel bad for them.

The can do both. You realize there are different divisions of the fda right? It’s not rocket science. They are different departments. Read the article I linked to. Quit defending them when they are doing a poor job. No formula means babies will die.

As usual, the government is the problem. Stop banning eu formula.

Agree with you. Based on this article it seems like it’s a distribution problem as well, not only a monopoly problem. I think that’s a good thing. Government can resolve distribution problem relatively quickly. Needs the will to do so though. Monopoly problem can temporarily be alleviated by importing European and Canadian baby formula.

Serious question. If they lift the ban in EU formula, are the EU companies really going to have the supplies to ship here? How are they in any better state from a manufacturing perspective than we are? Our shortage isn’t just because of the Abbott’s Lab closure.

Amazon has plenty.

If you choose Canada as your country on amazon, there is lots in stock. And then they ship direct to you.

I think by September this has to be resolved. I wouldn’t stock up because you don’t know which formula your baby will take and also there is always potential for recall or something. But I don’t see how this can continue till September.

Also you’re a jerk. There are existing babies right now who can’t eat and you’re going to stockpile for September. I’m due in 3 weeks, likely can’t breastfeed due to health issues, and I’m not stockpiling.

Sorry that came out wrong, I did t mean like going and cleaning the shelves. I meant buying one every few weeks or so. I can't breastfeed and the idea of not having food when my baby gets here is scary for me too you know.

No. Your baby isn’t here yet.

Amazon is out of stock of the majority of specialty formulas. This is a real issue. The Biden administration recognizes that it’s a real issue. Stop trying to pretend that it is not. I agree with PP on Amazon.ca . The best thing to do is for ppl to call enfamil and similac and ask what the Canadian equivalent to their specialty formula is.

True. But it is made much worse by the Abbot closure.
