IMO the existence of TJ leads districts to parents who're rejected having a chip on their shoulder which leads to more advocacy at the NOVA highschools for enrichment for the best students.

Virginia Science Olympiad started off 20 years ago as an FCPS program that the county ultimately couldn't run (leading to it becoming independent). As a result, Fairfax County has traditionally been the center of Science Olympiad in VA, with Loudoun on the rise in recent years.

(Interestingly, TJ's team hasn't even been around for that long: Langley/Fairfax/McLean have been around since 2002, while TJ is first recorded in 2010. Langley has won the state title more times than TJ because of this.)

The new VASO director was the Lake Braddock coach and taught there. She is now teaching at TJ. Good job TJ!

The 2023 State Tournament is coming up on 3/25 at UVA. Will be a good measuring stick to see if last year was a fluke or if other schools in the area are catching up.

Too many white parents are envious of highly achieving Asian students (especially at TJ) doing better than their snowflakes.

Kids who had done SO previously are not signing up due to the time commitment. So being in TJ SO team doesn’t mean they are the best or smartest. Smart TJ kids are doing other activities in the 180+ clubs which provides much more value for their time. This is the truth.

Same with Lake Braddock. Those are the 3rd string kids facing TJ so seems like it's an even contest then.

I know these posts always make me laugh. So many excuses for why TJ lost to a "lesser" school. They may as well write the dog ate my homework. Look TJ may be a great school but they hardly cornered the market on intelligence or hard work. The LB kids deserve a lot of credit for rising to the ocassion.

New to this thread, but didn't this happen over a year ago. Why are we still talking about it?

US loses in soccer because the best athletes play basketball and football.

State tournament was two weekends ago and TJ won by 50. Looks like the regional loss was a wake up call.

Yep. TJ pretty much dominated the event. According to the scoresheet they won 10 of the 25 events (pretty good given there were 24 schools competing) and finished highly in nearly all of the others. We'll see how they fare at Nationals.
