Why does pot smell like skunk now?

You aren’t! There are people on here who think I just don’t remember what it smelled like, but I would swear it didn’t smell this way. Maybe it really does have to do with how we perceive odors- maybe my nose has changed in 40 years! Maybe there’s more THC/resin, maybe it’s stronger, maybe there always WAS this variety (a PP said it’s more high quality pot that smells this way). Fascinating.

Think about it this way: It’s called skunk now for obvious reasons. Back in the day it was called herb and grass — also for obvious reasons. Something has changed. I went to college with a lot of rich kids who were serious about their recreational drugs when it still smelled like “herb”.

I agree. This is not new at all. It may be stronger now, but pot smokers always smelled bad.

They smelled bad, but the smell was different.

We have medicinal grade and many strains smell nothing like skunk weed. They smell great, like pine and lemon. It has to do with the terpenes which vary among strains.

Don't kid yourself. They all smell a bit skunky.

I have not smelled pine or lemon. Just skunk. If you are the "aroma" poster talking about farm-to-table artisanal lifestyle weed you seem to want us to believe you're

when really you're no different than

.

You are right.

Myrcene, a common cannabis terpene also found in hops and mangoes, can smell so similar to a Pepé Le Pew love trail that one of the most coveted weed strains is simply called “Skunk.” While not all strains with myrcene smell like skunks, it's a common trait — and one that stoners have grown to love.

I am 49 and I agree the smell has always been bad, there is just more of it now and it is more intense. Smokers never seem to be able to smell themselves, it is especially bad in sweaters and their hair. I always take strong coffee into meetings to breathe when I have to meet them in person.

Iremember going to concerts in the 80s and 90s and smelling more of an herby, catnippy smell. These days, I definitely smell skunk. Why do people want to deal with that skunky smell is beyond me.

Agree. Even in Jamaica for spring break back in the day it did not smell like skunk.

I’ve never smoked weed. But my friends who have used it and then quit say they noticed the smell more after they stopped using it. You probably are experiencing this.

All weed is all GMO garbage now

Yep. There’s a reason they call the cheap weed skunk.

Good weed has a sweet smell. Don’t smell that around DC too much anymore.
