I was around pot a lot, in different places, states, and countries in the late 80s through the 90s and never once smelled the skunk smell that is common now.

54 and there always had been a type of pot called skunk weed. And it smelled strongly of skunk prior to burning even. It does seem much stronger now. It is everywhere and I smell it even on roads going pretty fast not just at lights etc. I’m not a fan. And forget about places like Georgetown waterfront. It’s like a beach in Jamaica there.

Yes. It smelled of skunk before burning but that was just one type. I always thought it was stronger. I agree with pp that in the 90s it smelled like catnip and wasn't so over powering. Easier to hide from my parents.

I never tried smoking it and it smelled like skunk to me as far back as 2002 -
Do not recall anything specific before that because l was too young.

+100

I had a ton of stoner friends in the 80s/early 90s. It didn’t smell like skunk. Definitely catnip smell, dried herbs.

Nope. Back in the day, and at least through the mid 80s, it did not smell like skunk. (I say this from my limited experience in three different major East Coast cities and multiple experiences with high school parties, college campuses, and well known and not so well-known clubs in NYC. I wouldn't describe the smell as pleasant, but it wasn't anything like the skunk smell that I've noticed in recent decades. Younger people assured me that "it has always smelled like that" -- but it really hasn't. My most recent experience was extremely unpleasant and long-lasting, and not something I'd want to repeat -- very different from the gentler, hazy, mellow of my youth.

Thanks OP and PPs for affirming the accuracy of my memories.

It does smell like skunk! My coworker and I walked by a hotbox car in our parking lot tonight and said the same thing!

Gotta be shitty quality but easy to get stuff. You’re right though.

No. When it smells like skunk it’s bad.

Opinions are all over the place on here- it’s so interesting! I’m 50 and had a lot of experience with pot from the mid 80s to the mid 90s and don’t remember the skunk smell. Maybe the newer stuff smells like skunk because like a PP said it’s now grown locally, in hydroponic labs, whereas in 1989 the stuff was from Central and South America…
