Why does pot smell like skunk now?

Wait it didn’t used to smell like skunk? I’m pro legalization but I have never in my life understood the attraction of smoking something that smelled like skunk. (I want both in the 80s so I don’t have that point of comparison.)

No- it didn’t smell like that to me in the mid 1980s… but some people on here say it always has!

Another old person here who swears it always smelled bad and skunk-like. At least back then I smelled it only at parties and some concerts. Now that stink is everywhere.

SOME strains have always smelled like skunk and others have not and still don't. Some smell citrusy or herbal or minty... I would keep searching for a less skunk smelling strain if I were you. Those frequently on skunk smelling weed don't smell it as well as others.

No- it didn’t smell like that to me in the mid 1980s… but some people on here say it always has!

Another 80s teen, now 52, and it did not smell like skunk. Burning rope, yes. An unpleasant smell, yes but decidedly not skunk.

Thanks for thread, OP. I mentioned this to my 20-something DD a while back and she thought I was crazy…or maybe just ancient. Weed/pot/whatever had a completely different smell in the ‘80s. I wasn’t fond of the smell then, but it’s much stronger and worse now.

I’m glad to get some feedback- I thought it was just me (and my college age kids don’t really believe me that it smelled different back in the day!). What is strange is that some people on here think it’s always smelled this way, so I’m still not sure if my nose has changed or if the pot has! (Or weed!)

On a related note, I want to know why the smell of pot always lingers in my car when I catch it from a passing car or the car ahead of me. Even after rolling down the windows it tends to stick for a bit. I never had this problem with tobacco smoke. It's irritating!

I spent four years at a hippie private college in 1998-2002 and I swear I smell far more pot today from passing cars than I ever did from a nearby dorm room.

I'm 38 and it has smelled like skunk and been called weed (in addition to pot) since my teens.
