Over the same periods in 2020-21, 2019-20, 2018-19, and 2017-18, TJ's enrollment was down 4, 2, 11 and 6 students, respectively.

So more kids leaving TJ than in 3 or the past 4 years, but no more than in one of those years (2018-19).

The more relevant statistic should be among 9th graders. Among 9th graders enrollment fell (as of January 2022) by 8 students.

Over the same periods in 2020-21, 2019-20, 2018-2019, 2017-18 TJ's enrollment was down 1, 1, 5 and 1 among 9th graders.

In other words, kids leaving TJ is quite alarming on a statistical level. This will probably widen as the months go by.

The best STEM high school in the nation is also offering remedial algebra classes. Can't make this up.

Wow this is terrible. These kids should not be at TJ.

Yes, all of those Asian kids kids who dropped out should not be at TJ.

PP here, I really don’t care what race the kids are who are taking remedial Algebra. They don’t belong at TJ. If they can’t even hack algebra, you think they are going to be successful in the higher level math and science courses after that? They belong at their base school. TJ should just recommend they go back to their base school. These kids are going to struggle and continue to struggle.

You are making it a race issue, not me.

LOL, you literally posted an article screeching about the new admissions standards.

Nope, I did not post the article but I looked at the data and read about the remedial Algebra offering.

You don’t get it. TJ is not going to help these kids at all. In fact it’s going to be a big hit to their self confidence, that they are not good enough, smart enough. They will be looked at as the dumb kids. They will struggle thru high school. For what? To say they went to TJ when they really don’t belong there? To ultimately end up in the bottom 1/3rd of 1/2 of the class.

The kids who dropped out already was smart enough to know that. They were not cut for this place. They left and their high school experience and mental health will be far better for it.

Yes, why are Asian parents pushing their kids to be there when they don’t belong there?

It’s a bigger class — why are you comparing numbers? You need a percentage.

But if you’re looking at net effect of changes to the overall # of Asians at TJ it’s HIGHER than it was 3-4 years ago.

As in, no one is “stealing” seats from Asians. They have more than they did a few years ago.

It’s a remedial class to address pandemic-related learning loss. It doesn’t sound like they expect it to be around forever.

According to these numbers, of the eleven students who have left TJ during this school year, 8 of whom are freshmen....

6 are Asian
4 are Hispanic
1 is white
ZERO are Black

No breakdown of which ones are the freshmen, but still very enlightening.

I look forward to OP coming back and disavowing all of her racist dog whistles.

Maybe we should instead take comfort in that the school is not the toxic and unwelcoming environment towards URMs as alleged for years.

It'll take a couple of years before this is the case. There are reports of some students being jerks - 2024 kids calling themselves "the last REAL TJ class" etc etc.

But, assuming the stay is granted (which it has to be or else chaos will ensue), the class of 2026 will have the class of 2025 to look up to and to take care of them, which will be of immeasurable value to those kids.

Additionally, by that point over half of the school (because class sizes are larger) will have been selected by the new process. Will make a tremendous difference in terms of the climate of what behavior is acceptable and what isn't.

Two of the parents doing the most damage to the school environment right now are a parent and a step-parent of 2024 kids. One of them resigned as PTSA president already in disgrace.

Thought it would be like old TJ and modern MIT where it is so hard, everyone has to work together to get through. Under old system, classmates complaining the loudest didn't even make the first cut and would have been miserable. There were problems I was hoping would get better:

1)Return to fee-free test: The Class of '97 was the first pay-to-apply and the first to not have the highest number of merit finalists and the first to lose to Stuyvesant and much fewer "A"s in shared '96 '97 classes by '97ers. Had fingers crossed that removing the stupid fee NOBODY wanted, would draw a bigger pool and return TJ to its heyday. I would hate to think some kid on the fence or genius from a poor family didn't apply and gave the spot to a misfit/more academically-challenged rich kid. NOBODY on either side thought removing the fee was a bad idea, both lottery and merit groups.

2)Eclectic ideas from all parts of NOVa: When a huge bulk of students come from Rachel-Carson or previously Longfellow, exposure suffers. As a huge part of TJ is innovation, who better to solve issues such a failing minorities since the onset of virtual or pork-spending on Football Arenas instead of building a second TJ or tutoring intensive to catch students up after pandemic? Rich, brainy kids might be the best candidate if they knew about it. When one goes to Haycock->Longfellow->TJ->UVa Echols the circle is small. From those 30 Haycock kids you might not find a bestie who plays clarinet and lacrosse and loves flirting with girls. When you bring in the top 30 from every middle school, your chances increase.

FWIW, I was strongly opposed to getting rid of the standardized test because people say to women and minorities from poor areas- you cheated, didn't deserve it, are dumb, etc and this is a way to prove just because you went to Langston Hughes and not Rachel Carson doesn't mean you aren't better than the applicants the year before you. Just because your parents divorce and you can't see your dad if you move to the "grade-inflation" district you are dumb. I did however hope for the best once everything was said and done. Instead all I saw was anti-Asian whites dancing in the street.

Agreed

Agreed

Unfortunately, the fee in large part paid for the exam. Wait and see what happens with these kids.

This is correct. Prior to the admissions changes, the dropout rate was consistently between 10-15% during the freshmen year.

That seems like a pretty huge indictment of the prior admissions process. 10-15% dropping out means the old process wasn't working.

It's worth noting that the large majority of those dropouts took place after the conclusion of the year. And we still have to see what happens year over year with 2025, and (if the process is allowed to proceed) with 2026 eventually as well.

But your point is a good one. You shouldn't have that many kids leaving a selective admissions high school.

No - it was more like 4 - 8% under the old system.

Hi there! I am OP.

I started this thread based on a simple, YES/NO question:

- are there significantly more TJ drop outs under the new admission system?

NO WHERE did I mention, or even imply, suggest, infer, etc. race, in any of my posts. I’m just a parent of a TJ applicant, and a younger child who may apply in 2 years.

But YOU brought race into this, PP. You and one or two others, who are apparently OBSESSED with race. So obsessed, you can’t even answer a simple YES / NO question without making it about YOUR obsession with race. Oh - and you can’t answer without calling someone a racist.

Then - on top of that - you actually have the nerve to call ME a racist??! Seriously?? You obviously don’t know me.

Rather, it’s clear that you are the bigoted, anti-Asian racist here, OP. You and your friends - BIGOTS AND ANTI-ASIAN RACISTS.

Now that we have cleared that up, I invite you to take your race-obsession elsewhere to bicker with people (here, for instance: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1039775.page

This thread is about establishing facts and a simple yes/no answer, which you obviously can’t provide.

That’s false. The difference that you’re missing was covered by sophomore admissions.

Hi OP. The answer to your original question, as of now, is no.

Wishing your child the best of luck in the admissions process should you partake in it.
