I think most parents at places like Sidwell and GDS want their school to follow whatever the CDC or local health departments recommend. There are families at those schools with high risk kids/parents, just like everywhere else. I'm so grateful that our school has been following the advice of its medical advisory board, and I hope they will continue to do so. These schools are not likely to be influenced by a loud minority of outliers on an anonymous message board. Everyone hopes masking will not be necessary next year. Maybe it won't be necessary in the late spring. But right now the daily cases are nearly as high as last winter's peaks, and this variant is incredibly contagious. No school wants to see community members become ill and die (as can happen, even with fully vaccinated people, and especially with elderly, immunocompromised, diabetic, or cancer patients who also might be faculty, staff and parents or caregivers). I trust my school to continue to listen to health experts, not the arm-chair epidemiologists at DCUM.

Next year? Are you crazy? I think you need to check your anxiety. BTW MoCo is almost at CDC threshold for “low” cases in case you haven’t caught up on your doomsday reading

I know several healthy people who were vaxxed and boosted that have long term health concerns from omnicron. Both young and healthy.

I know a few very healthy people that died driving! So. Life is full of risks.

And yet I bet you still wear your seatbelt and make sure your DC does too. You would certainly feel differently about driving your kids around if seatbelts were optional. During a pandemic I feel different about the risk level for my child with optional masking.

Wearing a seatbelt should be optional! My kids and I will always wear them. I don't want the government acting as the nanny state.

So when people with inadequate insurance are disabled when not wearing a seat belt, we should just pay for the treatment and lifetime care out of everyone else's tax money? Because that is what happens. The reason the government passes public health and safety laws and guidelines is because we all end up paying for the people who make bad choices. We're all connected. Generally, in a governed country, your options end when the cost of your mistakes to the rest of the people is deemed too high. If we can prevent those costs, we should.
