James Madison University. Never even heard of it until my kids were seniors and started applying. And all I hear about it is awesome things.

Tulane begs to differ with you.

It's been around since 1894

It's been up and down and up and down - just like all the rest of them, over a more than 100 year period. You have no clue what you're talking about. haha.

hahaha. wrong. why so defensive? Do you understand what 'trending' means?

Tulane is newly very, very trendy among the full pay private school set. How you know: all of the middle-low GDS and Sidwell kids go there. None of their parents went to Tulane. None of their parents' friends went to Tulane, nor does anybody on their block of NWDCbethesdaCCMDPotomac. You see, their parents all went to places like Northwestern and Cornell and Penn -- but now their similar kids can't get into Northwestern et al. So those middleish affluent kids need new targets.

Enter Tulane, Wisconsin OOS, Pitt, Santa Clara, Northeastern, Vermont, Clemson. But especially, Tulane.

LOL, you don't get invited out a lot b/c I know plenty on those NWdCCCCCMPotomac blocks who went to Tulane.

DP, but I don't get what you're trying to argue. Tulane isn't prestigious, but it's become a popular school in recent years because of is aggressive marketing campaign and because it fits a lot of checkboxes for high school students these days. Isn't that a good thing?

Grinnell tied @ 13 with Davidson on USNWR list and higher if you strike West Point and the Naval Academy from the list. Admit rate of 19%. Endowment is $2 bil and is #11 on list of endowment/student.

Its a great school, but statistically crazy how many in my immediate area half-way across the country are going there.

Yes. Michigan is the new target for high stats kids who want CS or engineering and would have targeted Ivies - especially Cornell - but have been shutout due to the test-optional shift. It’s also a fallback for Virginians who don’t get into UVA’s CS or engineering. Michigan may have a somewhat better CS and engineering program, but many (probably most) would take UVA for in-state tuition and proximity to home. However, UVA is half the size of Michigan and doesn’t have enough CS/Engineering seats, so students go to Michigan for more than twice the cost, which makes Michiganders very happy.

Same reason for Northeastern’s rise. Kids who want CS and engineering are scrambling to find a seat at anywhere decent. Test-optional and the surge in demand for these majors has made it very difficult to get these majors at a very selective college.

It's also very popular right now with the NE Jewish community, second to MD, it has the highest proportion of Jewish students for any state school.

Anonymous wrote:I would say Northeastern and Northwestern drew unusually outsized attention this year.

Obviously Northwestern has been a fabulous school for more than a century, but in terms of being a "hot" school, it just seemed like there was more buzz this year.

And obviously Northeastern has become a de facto "must apply" for a certain segment of kids.

Curious, do you know a lot of kids who applied to Northwestern/what are you basing that intel on? We absolutely love the school and were sort of hoping it was a bit more under the radar here in DMV, but haven't really been keeping track of online conversations or talking about it with other families... Thanks!

Definitely, not. How would it be under the radar at #7? Plus, lots of kids put their ED hopes on it with the hope of fewer legacy admits, although there are lots of sports spots.

How old are your kids? I'm also a native NoVa, born and raised, and I definitely heard a lot about this school as my kids reached middle school and beyond. It's a very popular choice and has been for some time.

8th and 10th. I only heard of it a few years ago and mostly kids that wanted to play college sports somewhere.

When I was at a Fairfax Co HS in the 80s--a big number of people went there. I have never heard it on anyone's college list in the last decade.

Radford was the Christopher Newport of the 80s. It was popular among kids then.

I went to Tulane in the 90s and I was definitely in good company as a Jew from New Jersey. Not many WASPs back then, I don't think, so maybe part of the NWDCbethesdaCCMDPotomac set this doesn't apply to, but I think anyone who thinks Tulane is some school newly being discovered by rich people from up north is mistaken.

Yes, I've never met anyone who didn't absolutely love that school. But it's been popular for a long time - definitely not a "fad school."
