Christopher Newport

This will be you for the next fours years:

"Where does Larla go to school?

"CNU"

"What?"

"Christopher Newport University."

"Never heard of it."

"Oh, it's an up and coming Virginia state school with a pretty campus."

"How nice! I guess Larla didn't want to go to UVA, William & Mary, or Tech?"

"Well . . . "

??This is a stupid analogy. There are numerous colleges on this board that I've never heard of. The only time where you went to college matters is 1. when you are actively applying to college and 2. for your first job and 3. if you are wanting to go to med school.

Vcu accepts more than 90% of its applicants. Cnu acceots more than 76%.

Many kids like our own with high stats have no desire to go to UVA or W&M and apply these schools. Also VCU has a med school auto acceptance program which is popular not to mention many high stat kids apply to these as fall backs.

+1. My senior would not even consider W&M. She would have been competitive there, but she's heard too many bad things about it being a pressure cooker full of weird, socially-awkward students, with bad food, and substandard dorms. Also, she wants to do college marching band and hopes to land at a university with a great band program. W&M only has a tiny pep band, so again it was a non-starter.

FYI, CNU has a marching band.

My DD, currently a junior, would also be competitive for W&M. We toured and she HATED it. Felt it was just as described above and the kids I know who go/went there are all a little “off”.

I just looked at the SCHEV outcomes report posted above and W&M does pretty well there: "Graduates showing the greatest appreciation across these measures tended to be from
William & Mary, the University of Virginia, Virginia Military Institute, the University of Virginia's College at Wise, Virginia Tech and James Madison University."

I was surprised to see UVA College at Wise so high in all those ratings. I know nothing about it and never hear of kids going there.

That report definitely shows that while JMU is similar to GMU, CNU, UMW, VCU in student profile, it definitely is a cut above the rest of that tier in student satisfaction with the experience.

The schools that come out worst in that report are GMU and particularly VCU.

Not sure it matters that much for medical school. That is mostly MCAT and GPA.

I haven't been asked in years at work about my education. I work in high tech. It all starts to be about your experience and reputation.

That isn't fair. CNU 75th percentile stats are probably below 25th percentile for UVA and William & Mary (which is more the domain of URM, first gen, athletes, etc.). These would likely not be admission options. The question would be whether choosing to attend CNU would be detrimental vs. choosing MWU, GMU, JMU, or VCU.

Where you go to school matters, and can help you on your way, but it shouldn't define your life, nor should you let it.

It was ODU level at best. I know it's gotten more selective since then, but no I'm not convinced. I'd be embarrassed to send a kid there still.

To me, in VA, there's UVA, W&M, Tech, JMU, VCU and MW -- and nowhere else worth thinking about or being proud about.

UVA, Tech Engineering, W&M.
That's it. Nowhere else.

What of your kid doesn't have the grades for those schools, or you don't have the money for privates or out of state?

Then you do GMU, JMU, VCU, etc. And they are excellent schools. Ignore the ridiculous snobs on this board. Virginia is a goldmine of public universities.

Indeed, said the Maryland mom. You are so lucky.

Yes! Until this thread, I had no idea that each of these VA schools were public. Always thought that GMU was private.

I refer to this chart often. First year admissions data for all public and private universities in VA.

https://research.schev.edu/enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp

Important for recent data to look at how many kids submitted test scores. Some schools have high scores because so few submitted--so you have a stronger chance at them then the scores might indicate.

That is an interesting point and the variation is interesting. At the high end, 51% of UVA and W&M entering students submitted SAT scores for Fall 2021. The next highest is VT at 41%, followed by GMU at 37% and CNU at 36%. No other schools were above 30%.

For GPA the results are reversed, with the lowest percentages of incoming students submitting GPA scores at UVA (83%) followed by W&M at 89%. I wonder who the 17% at UVA are that enter without providing a GPA? They don't have anywhere close to 17% international, I believe.

DP. This is *exactly* what my DC said about W&M. I guess there is a certain type for whom that school is appealing?

In VA, I think JMU is probably the best place for marching band.

+1
JMU's marching band is incredible.

Seriously. No one has heard of this school outside of the DMV. Why in god's name would you waste your money to go here?

My DD reached out to a professor about a very specific question in a major she is interested in and he could not have been more responsive and helpful. Invited her to sit in on a class, which she did, and put her in touch with students to follow up with. I think some folks on here are using seriously outdated data points and memories.

Oh, absolutely. Not to mention, flat-out making things up.

Where else did you tour? CNU does have the most consistent architecture, at least for the new buildings, and they seemed to have the newest buildings overall, but we saw other things we liked at other schools.

We loved UMW and JMU. W&M was very pretty, but didn't appeal to my daughter. UVA's lawn is lovely, but the rest of kind of meh.

Name any school in any state and with the exception of the flagship universities, the same could be said about them. But keep on chasing that prestige, I guess?
