| My teen fell in love on the tour, but I don’t see much about it here. Anyone have insight? They may end up there over JMU and several out of state options. |
| Easy to apply to most of the Virginia publics, see where they get in, decide then. |
| I know a few kids there. They all seem happy. My son applied as a backup to his first choice and was accepted with a small bit of merit. Beautiful, small campus. Not sure there’s much happening around there. |
| You’d be crazy to go there over JMU |
| Up and coming school. Tons of capital invested in the facilities in the last few years. Campus is very pretty. It is a smaller public school with about 5,000 students. The surrounding area of Newport News is fine but not much going on. |
OP here - why? Stats seem very similar. |
| Lovely campus. We were very impressed with it. |
| Cousins daughter recently graduated. They thought it was a hidden gem. Great experience and good job after graduation (impressive for being in class of 2020). |
| Recently toured and we absolutely loved it. VA students so lucky to have such a nice variety of in state options. Much smaller than JMU and way diff feel. My kid ended up elsewhere but would have gladly gone there. Stunning campus. |
LOL. Not at all. |
JMU is better know and more prestigious and clearly more fun. |
| I am sure that this doesn’t characterize the entire student body, but I still can’t get past the girl in my sorority who transferred from there and sincerely told us that Jewish people had horns and tails. She didn’t stick around when she realized that our chapter was a mix of faiths. |
What year was this? |
| Have a kid currently at CNU. Beautiful campus and small school feel with a conservative bent. Professors are accessible and engage the kids. Also merit money seems to flow pretty freely. My kid is happy there. |

It's been a few years, but when our oldest was looking at VA schools (we're in state) CNU was a nothing school much closer to the bottom of the pack than the top and not even in the same league as JMU or Mary Washington. It was ODU level at best. I know it's gotten more selective since then, but no I'm not convinced. I'd be embarrassed to send a kid there still.
To me, in VA, there's UVA, W&M, Tech, JMU, VCU and MW -- and nowhere else worth thinking about or being proud about. |
