Anyone who thinks Youngkin cares even remotely about public schools has another thing coming. One of the first things out of his mouth after the election was that he was going to funnel lots of money into charter schools. He successfully tricked suburban white women into thinking he cares about their kids’ education.

I think his target audience is actually the parents who pulled their kids OUT of public school and are now footing private school bills and paying taxes with vastly reduced buy-in to the local district (beyond property values). A lot of them will now likely support charter/vouchers rather than the public schools, and he will try to deliver for THOSE parents, not the ones remaining in public school. My kids' schools' regular enrollment is off by about 15% compared to pre-pandemic and other local elementaries are seeing a similar drop in numbers. LCPS has had to delay construction on like five new schools because of lower enrollment.

Our principal thinks if the mask mandate gets dropped, some of those kids might return. I think most will not, especially not if their parents think there's any chance of a covid vaccine mandate for public school kids.

From the article:

The division will also add an additional year to the construction timelines for all five of the schools, Lewis said, because projected economic growth and demand for construction work will lead to fewer bids on projects, and ultimately, slower building processes. Lewis said it is becoming increasingly difficult to complete building projects on time.

Many LCPS schools had summer construction projects that lasted well into the school year because of issues with construction bids and supplies, so I am not surprised they are extending the timelines. As for the enrollment, the pace at which LCPS has been growing the last few years could not have continued indefinitely.
