Why isn’t the four-year sentence for a miscarriage a bigger story?

My mom worked nicu at a hospital in a white very upper class area. She said so many of the women would just do cocaine to induce labor. They test every baby for drugs when they are born. They’d just note on the chart that the baby was cocaine positive and go on with their day.

wow, did not know that.

DP. The mom nurse is probably leaving out the social worker and/or legal consequences associated with the test results.

This. I am a nurse as well (pediatrics), and a baby with cocaine in his or her system is an automatic social work consult usually leading to CPS involvement. Just because the baby is discharged home with the mom doesn't mean that's where it ended for those families.

Wait
She was on drugs and miscarried
If she had never been pregnant she would not have been charged?
So is the charge for the drugs or the miscarriage

The charge is for committing murder (the miscarriage) while committing a misdemeanor (the drugs.)

So now every miscarriage will be examined for possible murder charges?

Ate soft cheese and miscarried? Murder
Smoked cigarettes and miscarried? Murder
Poorly controlled diabetes? Murder
Contracted an STD? Murder
Got in a car accident? Murder

Anyone who doesn't see this as a way to control pregnant women isn't paying attention.

My aunt was a NICU nurse and worked with too many inconsolable babies who were suffering, screaming and shaking from the symptoms of drug withdrawal. Her stories about these babies whom almost never had visitors and would often end up in foster care was heartbreaking.

And it’s been going to for years but where does it stop? Hard drugs? Alcohol? How do you determine a miscarriage was a result of something the mom did? This will open a whole new can of worms.

And also this will make it so that women who do want substance abuse treatment while pregnant be scared to get it.

The charge is for committing murder (the miscarriage) while committing a misdemeanor (the drugs.)

But the medical report said cause of death was not investigated
And medical report mentioned other possible causes for the miscarriage

No it won't.

Pretty much. For some reason, women who aren't brown don't seem to care, and I don't understand why.
They are coming for you next.

No. If you'd read the article, you'd know that this has been happening for years and years. It's not new.

You've got it backwards. Most women don't care. Only some white women care, but not all.

I predict this is more a way to control only some pregnant women; others will get a pass with a boatload of excuses when they miscarry for the same reasons.

A baby on my floor when I gave birth was going through opiate withdrawals. I knew because of the newborn’s piercing high pitched screams of agony. It was gutting.

Two of my siblings were adopted from DC Foster Care and born drug addicted. They are living a life sentence.
